More than half a century Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember  (ITS) has dedicated itself to national education. Innumerable intellectuals of the nation are born from ITS and contribute to the nation. One of them is Prof. Ir Widi Agoes Pratikto MSc PhD who has been active in the international maritime world.

One of his great contribution to international maritime world is when he served as Executive Director of Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs, Fisheries, and Food Security (CTI-CFF). The Coral Triangle is a marine area located in the western Pacific Ocean icluding waters of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Timor Leste and Solomon Islands. Its named after its staggering number of corals (nearly 600 different species of reef-building corals alone), the region nurtures six of the world’s seven marine turtle species and more than 2000 species of reef fish.His journey in international maritime world start in ITS as a student in Faculty of Marine Technology. In 1979, because of his academic achievement, he was awarded as ITS Model Student. After graduation, Widi decided that he want to pursue career as lecturer in ITS.

His choice to become a lecturer demands Widi to further adding his knowledge. Consequently, the Master and Doctorate degrees also successfully achieved in 1983 and 1992 in the United States. And winning twice predicate lecturer model in this FTK give him a degree Professor in Coastal Engginering in 1999.

Then, in 2002 his journey as a government bureaucrat started. “At that time Mr. Rohmin Dahuri (Former Minister of Marine, red) asked me to join the Department of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (DKP) as the Director General of Coastal and Small Islands (P3K),” he said.Armed with the sincere intention to contribute to the country, he too accept the offer. His first day in government is a challenge. This is because of the condition of the coast and thousands of small islands in Indonesia are still a concern. “Infrastructure and transportation were extremely limited, especially when compared with the land area. In terms of community economy the coast is also left behind, “explained Widi who is also the author of the book Sell ​​these Coasts and Small Islands.

Widi understand that only hard work is can improve that situation. And the first thing he did was instilling motivation and dedication to all employees. “We often spend time to discuss and organize development in coastal areas and small islands, “said the father of three children.However, now the hard work is beginning to show results. “The coastal economy and small islands are now beginning to raise. “It was the result of several packaged programs, such as the economic empowerment programs of coastal communities that provide strengthening of venture capital.

Through some marine research, Widi hopes ITS can realize a great dream that welfare society through science and marine technology. “For that, the synergy between departments and faculty at ITS needs to be done. In this interview, Widi also advised many ITS students to continue to sharpen themselves especially in communicating and loving nature.
