Carrying the spirit of equality in the world of technology, the Department of Electrical Engineering (DTE) at Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) once again hosted the International Seminar on Intelligent Technology and Its Applications (ISITIA) 2025. This international forum, now in its 26th edition, was held for three days starting Wednesday (23/7), attended by hundreds of participants from various countries, with a total of 149 scientific papers presented.

Dean of the Faculty of Intelligent Electrical and Informatics Technology (FTEIC) ITS, Prof Dr Diana Purwitasari SKom MSc, emphasized that technological innovation should not be dominated by certain groups alone. According to her, the lack of representation in the engineering field remains a real challenge. “Equal opportunities must continue to be pursued so that technology can be accessed and utilized by all,” she stated.

Echoing this, ISITIA 2025 Chairperson, Vita Lystianingrum Budiharto Putri ST MSc PhD, explained the reasoning behind the theme Fostering Equal Opportunities for Breakthrough Technology Innovations. This theme, she said, aims to drive collective awareness of the importance of creating space for all groups to innovate.

Not only academics, but the industrial sector also took part. Head of DTE ITS, Ronny Mardiyanto ST MT PhD, expressed his appreciation for the involvement of various parties, including PT PLN Unit Pelaksana Pembangkitan Tambora. For him, cross-sector participation is key to strengthening the relevance and sustainability of ISITIA.

Several international speakers shared visionary perspectives. Professor Rosa H M Chan from City University of Hong Kong highlighted bias in the development of AI-based healthcare technology. Training data that is predominantly from Western populations, she noted, can reduce accuracy when applied in Asia. She also proposed integrating AI with the Internet of Things (IoT) to provide more inclusive healthcare services that reach vulnerable groups.

From the energy sector, Professor Dr Ir Heri Suryoatmojo ST MT from DTE ITS introduced the concept of a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) as a future solution for energy management. Through IoT-based technology, VPP enables local communities to produce, store, and share energy independently, while expanding the use of renewable energy sources.

Meanwhile, Professor Norrima Mokhtar from Universiti Malaya encouraged participants to envision the future of Human-Device Interaction that is accessible to all. She believes that technologies such as computer vision and gesture recognition can help build a more inclusive digital ecosystem.

With the spirit of cross-disciplinary and international collaboration, ISITIA 2025 proves that inclusivity is more than just a slogan. Through its equality-driven theme, the event also supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those focusing on reducing inequality, strengthening innovation, and building global partnerships.
