ELECTICS ITS Supports Bank Indonesia Institute 2025 Research in Human Resources and Digital Services Development

Surabaya, ELECTICS ITS – The Faculty of Electrical and Intelligent Informatics Technology (F-ELECTICS) at Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) proudly hosted a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and visitation from the Bank Indonesia Institute (BINS). This important event took place on Thursday, June 12, 2025, from 13:00 to 15:00 WIB, at the ELECTICS ITS premises. This activity is an integral part of BINS’s efforts to support the implementation of the BI Institute 2025 Research, specifically focusing on strategies for Human Resources (HR) development and digital services export in Indonesia.

The BI Institute 2025 Research aims to strengthen the quality of national human resources and optimize the utilization of digital technology in the services sector. This is expected to encourage sustainable economic growth and enhance Indonesia’s global competitiveness. ELECTICS ITS was chosen as the main resource for this activity, an acknowledgment of the faculty’s strategic role and significant contribution to innovation development and the formation of superior human resources in the field of technology.

During this FGD session, two crucial topics, detailed in the Terms of Reference (ToR) provided by the Bank Indonesia Institute, were discussed:

1. Strategies to Overcome the Middle-Income Trap Risk: Human Capital, Technology, and Productivity
   • Lessons Learned from Korea, China, Vietnam, and Thailand
     The discussion on this topic delved into the essential role of HR quality as a fundamental basis for creating sustainable economic growth, stimulating innovation, and increasing productivity. The Bank Indonesia Institute highlighted that Indonesia’s HR index still lags behind several neighboring countries such as Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia. Therefore, increasing investment in research and development (R&D) is crucial to accelerate the pace of innovation and help Indonesia escape the middle-income trap. In this session, various aspects related to research and innovation at FT-EIC ITS, forms of cooperation with industry, and strategies for developing student competencies to produce innovative graduates who meet industry needs were elaborated.
2. Strategies for Developing Digitally-Enabled Services in Driving Economic Growth and Services Export
   Digital transformation has become a key driver of global economic growth, with Indonesia experiencing rapid growth in the digital services sector and becoming the largest digital economy in ASEAN. However, significant challenges arise from the dominance of foreign companies in providing digital services and the phenomenon of globotics (the convergence of digital globalization and AI automation), which has the potential to cause labor disruption and hinder the competitiveness of domestic industries. Therefore, a comprehensive strategy is needed to strengthen the national digital ecosystem through policies that support local industries, digital infrastructure development, and increased innovation and workforce skills. The goal is to enhance Indonesia’s digital economy competitiveness and independence. In the second session, the discussion covered the conditions and main challenges in digital infrastructure development in various regions of Indonesia, and the extent to which this affects access and equitable growth of the national digital services industry. Furthermore, concrete steps that have been and can be taken by universities to bridge the gap between digital education curricula and the real needs of the digital services industry today, particularly concerning practical expertise and adaptive skills, were also discussed. Finally, the most effective forms of collaboration between universities, industry players, and the government that have proven to accelerate digital innovation and research downstreaming, and how such models can be replicated or expanded, were deliberated.

The Dean of the Faculty of Electrical and Intelligent Informatics Technology ITS, Prof. Dr. Diana Purwitasari, S.Kom., M.Sc., is expected to receive this important visit to discuss highly relevant and strategic topics for the future of Indonesia’s digital economy. This activity clearly demonstrates ELECTICS ITS’s strong commitment to contributing to the development of superior human resources and a robust digital ecosystem in Indonesia, in line with the faculty’s vision to create innovations that have a real and positive impact on national progress.
