Introducing Senapas, a device designed by Agus Muhamad Hatta, Ph.D, a lecturer from Engineering Physics Dept of Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS). Senapas using optical fiber as sensor, enabling the device to detect the variation of human respiration.

Optical fiber is a long, spherical waveguide made from silica or polymer. It`s so small in diameter, less than 120 micrometer. This cable is a medium of light propagation delivering data from one place to another. The light source used is LED or lasers.

The sensor is put inside breathing mask. The principle of this sensor, is light propagation is disturbed by the change of air humidity and the presence of wind when the patient is breathing out. The breathing intensity and frequency is directly shown in the LCD monitor.

Optical fiber is chosen because of its small size, light weight, and immune to electromagnetic interference so its safe to be used in Magnetic Imaging Resonance (MRI)`s surrounding.

We really hope that senapas can be commercialized” Hatta said. This device is applicable in many ways. For example, to monitor the condition of miner`s breathing.
