Pasuruan, 28 November 2025 — The Community Service (Abmas) Team from the Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering (DTMM), Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), continues to demonstrate its commitment to providing technological solutions for coastal communities. Through an Abmas program led by Vania Mitha Pratiwi, ST., MT., the team introduced an innovative coating technology using modified paint enriched with silica and nanocopper to improve the durability of fishing boats in Kertosari Hamlet, Kalirejo Village, Kraton District, Pasuruan Regency.
This innovation aims to address common issues faced by fishermen, including wood decay, corrosion, and microorganism growth (biofouling) on boat surfaces. These conditions often lead to reduced vessel performance and increased maintenance costs.
Vania explained that the combination of silica and nanocopper enhances the mechanical properties of the coating while providing more effective antibacterial and anticorrosion protection. “With this technology, the service life of boat materials can be extended, allowing fishermen to reduce repair costs and improve operational safety,” she stated.
The program also includes training sessions for local fishermen on proper coating application techniques, boat maintenance processes, and material condition evaluation after use. The local community welcomed the initiative, as it offers practical solutions that are easy to implement without requiring complex equipment.
Through this activity, ITS reaffirms its role as an institution that excels not only in education and research but also in contributing directly to improving the welfare of coastal communities through innovative material technology.
