The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) Bladesmith competition is an international level competition in the field of metallurgy. This competition focuses on applying metallurgical engineering as a sword maker. In addition to reviewing the sword making process in terms of material engineering as well as raising the cultural value of the sword. In 2019, the ITS Bladesmith team was successfully selected as one of the finalists of 41 competitors in this competition, represented by Muhammad Rizal Afif and Fakhri Maulana Akbar, both ITS Department of Material Engineering students to compete in San Antonio, Texas, USA.
Afif explained “Comparing and competing with students from universities all over the world there are many lessons we have and it is an extraordinary life experience that is unforgettable” he said.
“On this occasion we presented a unique Sumatran sword, kerambit, which was combined with keris patterns, starting from the method of making it for centuries, which was presented in the form of reports and posters wrapped in scientific language. We are aware of the extraordinary culture of the archipelago and the metallurgical knowledge we have learned can be useful to lift Indonesian culture that has gone down and down “, he continued.
“Besides that, we got the opportunity to get to know and adapt the culture outside. Sharing knowledge and knowledge among students. As well as getting connections with several researchers and Indonesian people in the USA. Even though I didn’t get a chance to be a winner, this opportunity became very valuable in my life and developed my thinking internationally, “concluded Afif.
