May 12, 2025 – As part of the regular Guest Lecture Series held by the Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering (DTMM), the Faculty of Engineering once again hosted a guest lecture themed “Biomass-derived Activated Carbon Materials for Sustainable Energy and Environmental Applications.” The event, which took place on Thursday, May 8, 2025, in Room MT 204, featured international speaker Assoc. Prof. Dr. Suresh Sagadevan, an expert in the field of energy and environmental materials.
During the lecture, Dr. Suresh provided a comprehensive explanation of the vast potential of activated carbon derived from biomass as an innovative solution for supporting sustainable energy and environmental management. He highlighted how biomass waste—such as agricultural residues or organic materials—can be processed into high-value carbon materials capable of both storing energy and playing a role in environmental filtration and purification processes.
“Activated carbon from biomass is not only efficient for energy applications, but it is also highly effective in cleaning up waste, including water from the textile industry,” stated Dr. Suresh Sagadevan during his presentation.
He explained that activated carbon materials possess an extremely large surface area, making them ideal for use as supercapacitors, renewable energy batteries, and adsorbents in water and air purification processes. With this environmentally friendly approach, the research simultaneously offers solutions to two global challenges: the need for clean energy and the management of industrial waste.
The guest lecture was highly interactive, featuring a question-and-answer session that was enthusiastically followed by students and lecturers. Many participants were interested in the practical aspects of utilizing activated carbon, particularly in the fields of alternative energy and textile waste treatment.
