As an estimate for now and in the future, information technology is the backbone of the nation’s economic growth. Currently, the invasion of information technology has been felt in various fields of human life. This is fully realized by the government, so that since the last Repelita V, the government has declared that the development of higher education in the field of computers and informatics is one of the priority programs, together with other disciplines such as engineering, behavior, management, accounting, and the arts. .

Higher education is directed to prepare the Indonesian people to face the era of industrial and information development. For this reason, the government through the Directorate General of Higher Education in 1985 instructed to open a new undergraduate study program for the field of computer technology at four universities or institutes where ITS is included. At ITS, this program was originally named the Computer Engineering Study Program. However, since 1993, the name of the Computer Engineering Study Program was changed to the Department of Computer Engineering. Finally, in 1996 the department officially changed its name to the Department of Informatics Engineering based on the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education Number 224/DIKTI/Kep/1996, dated July 11, 1996. At this time, the Department of Informatics obtained an A accreditation based on the Decree National Accreditation Board for Higher Education (BAN-PT) Number 003/BAN-PT/Ak-X/S1/V/2006, dated 18 May 2006.

In addition to the Undergraduate (S1) program, the Department of Informatics also organizes the Post-Graduate (S2) program which was initiated in 1994, with the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education No. 2851/D/T/2001, regarding the permit for the implementation of Strata-2 (S2) Study Programs at the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology, Surabaya. And in 2011, the Department of Informatics began to organize a Doctoral (S3) program.
