ITS News — Students from the Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering (DTMM), Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), once again brought pride to their alma mater by winning First Place at the Dimension 4.0 Business Case Competition. The competition was organized by the Institut Teknologi Sumatera (ITERA) in collaboration with PT Wilmax Control and was attended by student teams from various universities across Indonesia.
The competition officially started on October 10, 2025, and was conducted fully online, covering all stages from proposal submission to the final presentation. After a rigorous selection process, the final presentation took place on November 16, 2025, with the winners announced on November 29, 2025.
The DTMM ITS team, competing under the name Team SmartRisk, stood out with their innovation titled “Smart Welding with IoT and Machine Learning for Real-Time Quality Control and Failure Prediction.” The proposed solution introduces an intelligent welding system based on the Internet of Things (IoT) and machine learning to enable real-time quality monitoring and early prediction of welding process failures in the manufacturing industry.
During their presentation, Team SmartRisk showcased a prototype system integrating vibration sensors, thermal sensors, and cameras into welding machines. The collected data are processed using machine learning algorithms to detect process anomalies, ensure consistent weld quality, and minimize the risk of product failure. This innovation was considered highly relevant to the needs of Industry 4.0, particularly in improving efficiency, workplace safety, and process reliability.
Team SmartRisk consists of Sigit Dwianto, Gherald Rheinart S., William Nathanael, and Yeremi Cavin Purba, under the supervision of DTMM ITS lecturer Alvian Toto Wibisono, S.T., M.T., Ph.D. Intensive academic guidance played a significant role in strengthening both the technical aspects and business feasibility of the proposed solution.
This achievement highlights the strong commitment of DTMM ITS students to delivering applicable innovations that address real industrial challenges. In addition to reinforcing ITS’s reputation at the national level, this accomplishment is expected to encourage further downstream development of student research to generate broader and more sustainable industrial impact.
