October 23, 2025 – The Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering (DTMM), Faculty of Engineering, once again hosted an international guest lecture as part of its Guest Lecture Series. This time, the event featured Assoc. Prof. Syazana from Universiti Sains Malaysia, who presented an engaging topic titled “Smart Polymers: From Shape Memory to Self-Healing Polyurethane Systems.” The activity was held on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, and was open to students and lecturers within the DTMM environment.
In her lecture, Assoc. Prof. Syazana introduced the concept of smart polymers—materials possessing the remarkable ability to adapt to environmental changes, such as temperature, pressure, or light. One of the most fascinating applications of this polymer type is the shape memory polymer, which can return to its original shape after deformation.
“Smart polymers hold immense potential to revolutionize various fields, ranging from biomedicine to materials engineering. With their self-healing capabilities, these materials can repair themselves without the need for human intervention,” explained Assoc. Prof. Syazana.
She further elaborated on self-healing polyurethane systems, which are polymers capable of automatically mending small damages through internal chemical reactions. This innovation opens up significant opportunities in developing more durable and efficient materials, especially for applications in construction, automotive, and flexible devices.
The guest lecture was met with great enthusiasm by the participants as it offered new insights into the future of smart materials that can “heal themselves.” Through the interactive and easily digestible explanation, participants were invited to see how research in modern polymer science can provide innovative solutions to future industrial challenges.
Through this event, DTMM reaffirmed its commitment to continuously inviting international speakers who can enrich academic perspectives and foster a spirit of research in the field of innovative and sustainable materials.
