ITS and IGES Increase Contribution to Overcome Waste in Indonesia

 

In a collaborative effort to address the waste management challenges in Indonesia, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) has strengthened its commitment to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by partnering with regional NGOs and government bodies. This collaboration, notably with the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), underscores ITS’s dedication to overcoming the waste crisis in the country. By joining forces with influential non-governmental organizations and governmental entities, ITS aims to significantly enhance its contributions towards achieving SDGs related to waste management, fostering a synergy that aligns with national and global sustainability policies. Through these strategic alliances, ITS is actively engaging in impactful initiatives, shaping a more sustainable future for Indonesia.

ITS Listed as SDGs Centers at Bappenas

 

Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) has been recognized as a Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) center by the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) of Indonesia. This recognition highlights ITS’s pivotal role in advancing the country’s SDG agenda. The acknowledgment as an SDGs center underscores the strong relationship between ITS, regional NGOs, and the Indonesian government in shaping sustainable policies. By being listed as an SDGs center, ITS has solidified its commitment to collaborating with regional non-governmental organizations and government bodies, fostering a collective effort towards achieving the nation’s sustainable development goals. This recognition not only signifies ITS’s dedication to sustainability but also signifies the university’s active involvement in driving impactful changes, aligning with national policies and global sustainability initiatives.

Guest Lecture Series in Sustainable Development Goals (GLS on SDGs)

 

Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) allows foreign educators to diversify their teaching skills by conducting multiple lecture sessions within relevant ITS departments. Additionally, ITS promotes awareness of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through this initiative, allowing lecturers to share their expertise and practices related to SDGs during these sessions. The Guest Lecture Series (GLS) on SDGs, launched in 2020, has proven highly successful. Starting from the Fall semester of 2022, ITS is extending invitations to international faculty members who have yet to participate in any ITS programs previously. These scholars are encouraged to share their knowledge and experiences based on their respective fields of expertise. The target audience for this program includes students at all levels (Undergraduate, Graduate, and Postgraduate) within ITS, as well as educators from high schools in Surabaya, particularly in the context of the GLS sessions focusing on Sustainable Development Goals.

GLS 2022 Adapts to the Pandemic: Going Virtual

 

Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) became the first university in Indonesia conducting guest lecture on United Nations’ SDGs. Based on the necessity for students to understand the Sustainable Development Goals established by the United Nations, this program aims to fulfil their needs in comprehending and applying Sustainable Development Goals. The lecture is delivered by lecturers, NGO, experts, and academics from around the world. ITS’s GLS on SDGs stands as a beacon of inspiration, guiding the way towards a world where education becomes the cornerstone of sustainable development.

Net Zero Emission Talk through GPBL ITS-SIT-IHI

 

Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) with Shibaura Institute of Technology (SIT), Japan, and IHI Corporation hosted the second Global Project-based Learning (GPBL), a comprehensive heavy-industry manufacturer having history extends back to the establishment of Japan’s first modern shipbuilding facility in 1853, Ishikawajima Shipyard. The coproduction was as an effort in maintaining the quality of global education, and to strengthen the partnership of consortium-based university-industry linkage.

Strengthening Consolidation, Finnish Ambassador Visits ITS Campus

 

ITS is actively expanding its collaboration with international networks based on science and technology, with a special emphasis on contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To realize this goal, ITS warmly welcomed a visit from the Ambassador of Finland to Indonesia to discuss collaboration opportunities, particularly in academic cooperation, programs with industry, and research in digital rehabilitation and communication technology.

ITS and JAMK University Finland Pioneering Digital Rehab and SDG Excellence

 

 In a momentous stride towards international academic and research collaboration, JAMK University of Applied Sciences Finland visited Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) from November 28 to December 6, 2022. The primary objective of this visit is to fortify institutional ties between JAMK and ITS, with a specific emphasis on collaborative ventures in digital rehabilitation and rehabilitation development in Indonesia. Notably, the visit took on additional significance by actively participating in the global initiative of data gathering for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically aligning with SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, concurrently highlighting a commitment to fostering collaboration to provide services for patients in need of rehabilitation.

Waste has consistently posed a significant challenge and disaster source, both in large and medium-sized cities. Stemming from concerns regarding waste management, ITS collaborates with Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland, and the Kediri City Government to explore solutions for effective waste management.

Ditmawa ITS Organizes Basic Training for Disaster Management Volunteers

 

The Directorate of Student Affairs (Ditmawa) of the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) collaborated with the Disaster Compartment of the ITS Alumni Association (IKA) to organize basic training to prepare volunteers for natural disaster management. In this activity, the committee also provided unique material to bring out the character of ITS, such as group dynamics, survival, and the role and function of students. There is also basic training on public kitchens, logistics, and equipment, as well as several other valuable materials. This activity aligns with the ITS motto, namely, Advancing Humanity. The slogan inspires the ITS community to have empathy and a social spirit implemented with real work.

ITS takes part in UIG Online Course on Sustainability 2022

 

After successfully becoming one of seven countries organizing the UI GreenMetric (UIG) Global Online Course on Sustainability 2021, Indonesia held it again in 2022 at the national level. Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), a member of the UIGM World University Rankings Network Indonesia (UIGWURN), also participated in the successful implementation of this online course on sustainability. Although it took place online, it did not reduce the enthusiasm of students to participate in this program. Each group has a different focus of discussion based on the 17 points of the SDGs and produced outcomes through studies on various sustainability challenges in Indonesia. The topics include emission reduction, education revitalization, gender equality, sustainable fisheries, and climate change mitigation in the community.

This commitment is manifested in several courses offered to the students and the community outside the campus. A compulsory course titled Insights and Application Technology (IAT), a mandatory course for senior students introduces the necessity of implementing SDGs in problem-solving. An elective class for students interested in understanding more is also provided, entitled Sustainable Development course. Accessible for ITS students, lecturers, researchers, NGOs, and the community outside campus and offered for international partners is a series of guest lectures entitled Guest Lecture Series on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), open in spring and fall. The SDGs Center of Study also offers incidental workshops and training for targeted communities and villages to develop SDGs education, literacy, and aiming for independence and adaptive management.

Promoting Environmental Care, ITS Educates on Waste Problems

 

Carrying the theme Solid Waste Management Project into the Community, the 2021 batch of Environmental Engineering Department students at the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) initiated educational activities to sort solid waste in the Kalisari area, Mulyorejo. This activity also collaborated with the ITS Environmental Lovers and Observers Group (KPPL). They presented material about solid waste, including problems, handling, and how to sort waste. Not limited to presenting material, the event continued with simulation activities to sort rubbish in communal waste bins provided by this student group. To set the right example, several lecturers from the Department of Environmental Engineering ITS also helped to practice the method of sorting waste into organic, plastic, and paper containers,

Promoting Education, ITS Teaches to Surabaya Children

 

Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) continues to boost educational initiatives by launching the “ITS Mengajar” program, which aims to provide quality education to Surabaya children. Through this program, ITS students and volunteers offer extra lessons to children from low economic backgrounds. These activities cover a range of subjects and skills, supporting the academic and social growth of children in the local community. The “ITS Teaching” initiative directly supports Education for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by implementing the principles of inclusivity, equity, and accessibility of education. The program reflects ITS’ commitment to achieving SDG Target 4.1, which aims to ensure that all children receive an inclusive, equitable, and quality education.
