A guest lecture titled “The Untold Secret of Data Science” highlighted the realities behind the data science profession that are often overlooked. In the presentation, speaker Dhany Saputra explained that the field of data science is frequently misunderstood as being solely about advanced algorithms, artificial intelligence, or complex machine learning models.
According to the speaker, the reality in the industry is quite different. A large portion of a data scientist’s work is actually focused on preparing and cleaning data before any analysis or modeling can take place. Raw data collected from various sources is often incomplete, inconsistent, or unstructured, making the preparation process a crucial step in any data science project.
During the session, Dhany emphasized that technical skills alone are not enough to succeed in the field. Understanding business needs and the context of a problem is equally important. Without this understanding, even the most sophisticated analysis may fail to produce useful insights for organizations.
