About UTSIP

UTSIP Kashiwa, initiated by the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences (GSFS) in 2013, offers a hands-on research internship program across various departments:
Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Studies, Information Technology, International Studies, Materials Sciences, Advanced Energy, Ocean Science, Physics, and Sustainability Science.

Program Schedule

  • Program A: May 25, 2026 – July 10, 2026 (47 days)
    Only one program will be conducted in 2026.

Program Structure

  • First Week: Orientation, lectures by leading GSFS researchers, Japanese language classes
  • Remaining Weeks: Research under laboratory guidance, proposal development, hands-on academic research
  • Final Day: Research presentation and Certificate of Completion Award Ceremony

Participation Fee

  • JPY 70,000 (payable on the first day)
    Fee waiver requests are automatically considered during application. Results will be announced with admission decisions.

Financial Aid

UTokyo provides:

  • UTSIP Scholarship: JPY 130,000
  • Accommodation

Applicants may also apply for external scholarships (e.g., FUTI, MIT-Japan, Honda Foundation, UCLA Terasaki Center). Multiple scholarship applications do not affect UTSIP selection.

Note:

  • No airfare subsidy provided. Participants must arrange their own flights.
  • Arrival: 1 day before program start; Departure: 1 day after program ends.

Insurance

GSFS provides health insurance covering medical expenses up to JPY 1,000,000 for injuries or illnesses during UTSIP.
Health certificate submission is required.


Accommodation & Life in Kashiwa

Participants will stay in designated housing (e.g., International Lodge Kashiwa).
Nearest station: Kashiwa-no-ha Campus Station (Tsukuba Express line).
Campus facilities include cafeterias and a sushi bar (lunch: JPY 400–600; dinner: JPY 500–700).

International Lodge Kashiwa Lodge

The nearest station to the Kashiwa campus is “Kashiwa-no-ha Campus Station” on the Tsukuba Express line. Tsukuba Express runs between Akihabara in Tokyo and Tsukuba in Ibaraki. Kashiwa-no-ha Campus Station is 30 minutes from Akihabara and 25 minutes from Tsukuba.

Akihabara is the gateway when you go to Tokyo, Shinjuku, Shibuya, or Ginza area using the Yamanote line. There is another station, Kashiwa Station on the Joban Line of Japan Railway (JR) which is a 25-minute bus ride to the Kashiwa campus. Kashiwa Station is also a key station linking with Tokyo.

Kashiwanoha Campus station

On the Kashiwa campus, you will find some cafeterias and a sushi bar. They are open for lunch and dinner. Lunch costs about JPY 400 to 600 yen, and the dinner is JPY 500 to 700. You will find a greater variety of restaurants, grocery stores, and shops near both stations, Kashiwa-no-ha Campus Station and the Kashiwa Station.

Eligibility

  • Undergraduate students (S1) batch 2023
  • Undergraduate students from batch 2022 are allowed to apply by permission of their academic and thesis supervisor, since participating in the program might delay their graduation

Required Documents:

  1. One original University Transcript. (English version). The GPA of applicants must higher than 3.0(out of 4.0)
  2. Certificate of Enrollment
  3. Scanned passport information page at least valid minimum one year per August 2024
  4. Valid English Proficiency Test Score (original). TOEFL iBT or ITP/IELTS/TOEIC
  5. One recommendation letter from an academic advisor
  6. Statement Letter (please download from here bit.ly/its-student-exchange )
  7. CV
  8. Research Plan
  9. Certificate of GCW Non Degree (minimum C) or Result Test GCW Non Degree min 80 (S2 Applicants can replace it with R2SEP certificate)
  10. ITS Students must consult with their parents for the financial aspects and please kindly provide the statement letter from your parents (in Bahasa) that your parents are support you (all financial & mental) to join this program. (No format required).

  • Combine all documents into one .zip/.rar file (PDF format)
