SURABAYA, Nusantaraabadinews.com – Rwandan international student Ntivuguruzwa Jean De La Croix has successfully completed her Doctoral Program in Computer Science in the Department of Informatics Engineering at the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) Surabaya, with seven publications ranked in Quartile 1 (Q1) in Scopus.
The student, known as Jean, explained that she received this golden opportunity to study at ITS through a Developing Country Partnership (KNB) scholarship from the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemdiktisaintek RI).
Her decision to choose ITS was based on its strong reputation as a research and technology institution.
“The ITS academic environment provides ample space for me to develop ideas in the field of internet security,” she said.
Furthermore, Jean shared that her research focuses on digital information security.
She noted that in today’s era, digital data transmission has increased rapidly and many people use social media, resulting in a significant amount of data that needs to be kept confidential.
Through this research, he seeks to create a better security system to protect personal data and sensitive information across various digital platforms.
Jean presented his first publication, titled “A Convolutional Neural Network to Detect Possible Hidden Data in Spatial Domain Images.”
This research proposes a new Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architecture capable of improving the accuracy of hidden data detection while simultaneously improving the stability of network training.
“The process involves three main stages: preprocessing, feature extraction, and classification,” he said.
Jean explained that in the preprocessing stage, a spatial rich model filter is used to amplify noise. Next, feature extraction is performed using two-dimensional separable convolutions to enhance the signal and capture local features.
Finally, in the classification stage, multi-scale pooling and three fully connected layers are used to produce more accurate predictions while also speeding up training time.
“These results have accelerated training time by up to 30.81 percent,” he explained.
Beyond academics, Jean also shared experiences from his three years at ITS.
He revealed that the ITS International Office has been very helpful, especially through the Buddy Department program, which has made it easier for him to adapt and understand the academic and social culture on campus.
“If there’s something I don’t understand, I usually ask the volunteers straight away,” he explained.
Finally, through his proud achievement, this student, mentored by Prof. Tohari Ahmad, SKom MIT PhD, has successfully become one of the graduates at the upcoming 132nd ITS Graduation Ceremony.
Jean’s story contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly point 4, namely Quality Education, and point 9, regarding Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure. (**)
