The Architectural Design Laboratory at ITS plays an important role in developing research-based sustainable design through the synergy between technological advancement and knowledge. Committed to producing innovative works deeply rooted in local contexts, the laboratory integrates the fields of architectural design, computation, structural systems, and professional practice.

Currently, its research and community engagement activities focus on exploring design and construction, studying environmental behavior, applying design thinking, and utilizing computational technologies in architecture. By integrating these fields, the laboratory strives to develop innovative design solutions that position buildings not merely as physical structures, but also as means of improving the quality of life of their users.

Research Roadmap

The Architectural Design Laboratory has developed a 2024–2029 Research Roadmap focusing on strengthening contextual architecture and the contextualization of architecture as a foundation for producing innovative architectural designs rooted in local contexts.

The research roadmap is developed through five main areas:

  • Building Design and Construction – encompassing architectural design, construction, local materials, structural systems, and building adaptability.
  • Architecture and Computation – developing the use of computational technologies, Building Information Management, data-driven design, and performative design in the design process.
  • Professional Studies – examining the development of architectural business practices, as well as project and construction management.
  • Environmental Behaviour and Cultural Studies – exploring the relationships between environment, behaviour, health, inclusivity, and culture, as well as the development and regeneration of traditional architecture.
  • Design Thinking and Methods – developing architectural design and representation methods to support systematic and innovative design processes.

These five areas are integrated through the approaches of Contextual Architecture and Contextualizing Architecture, connecting aspects of design, technology, environment, culture, methods, and professional practice.

Through the integration of these research areas, the roadmap aims to produce innovative, adaptive, and locally rooted architectural designs, positioning context as an essential component of the architectural design process and its development.
