Campus, ITS News – The Chemical Engineering Student Association (HIMATEKK) of Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) has once again proven its concrete commitment to environmental sustainability through an initiative called STRASH. As part of the grand HIMATEKK Eco Project (HOPE), this activity serves as a strategic platform for students to systematically manage inorganic waste within the campus environment.

Initiated by the Social Development Department, the activity was held in four periodical sessions—on April 10, May 8, and May 22—before reaching its peak on June 5, 2026, perfectly coinciding with World Environment Day. Located at the ITS Chemical Engineering Plaza, the program targeted the active involvement of students from the Chemical Engineering and Food Engineering Departments.

Strategic Collaboration and Point-Based Exchange System In realizing this environmental mission, HIMATEKK did not act alone. They established a synergistic collaboration with the ITS Eco Campus team to accommodate the exchange of waste successfully collected by the students.

The submission mechanism was neatly designed and recorded. Every student who submitted their inorganic waste had their data entered into a database to accumulate points. During its implementation, dozens of students actively and consistently participated, accompanied by a well-organized waste sorting process at the venue.

Appreciation System and Program Sustainability As a form of appreciation for the participants’ environmental care, the committee introduced a reward system. Students with the most active submission records received appreciation at the end of the STRASH period, ranging from light snacks to exclusive HOPE pins.

The Persons in Charge, Karissa Sukma Nareswari and Dinar Rahmawati, noted that this appreciation scheme proved to be a catalyst for student enthusiasm. “The reward system we provided successfully became an attraction and boosted the students’ spirit to regularly submit their waste,” they stated.

Despite receiving a positive response, the committee continues to conduct in-depth evaluations to perfect future programs. Challenges such as insufficient outreach regarding the waste bank’s existence and the choice of Friday as the submission day—when student mobility is relatively low—were noted as important points.

As a follow-up, information delivery and submission schedules will be announced much earlier in the next edition. Through this continuous evaluation, HIMATEKK ITS hopes the HOPE program will keep spreading green inspiration and making a tangible impact on the environmental sustainability of this Heroic campus.
