Campus, ITS News – The Chemical Engineering Student Association (HIMATEKK) of Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) has once again demonstrated its concrete commitment to environmental sustainability through the HIMATEKK Action Day 2026. Taking place at the Wonorejo Mangrove Ecotourism in Surabaya, this program was highlighted by the planting of dozens of mangrove seedlings and a coastal cleanup on Sunday (May 17).
As part of the large-scale HIMATEKK Eco Project (HOPE), this agenda targeted the participation of students from the Chemical Engineering and Food Engineering Departments, class of 2024 and 2025. The event was designed not merely as a ceremonial act, but as a comprehensive environmental education and awareness movement.

Environmental Education and Hands-on Action
The movement began with knowledge equipping. Collaborating directly with the management of Wonorejo Mangrove Ecotourism, the committee held a Welcome Party & Upgrading Action Day session. Participants were provided with an in-depth understanding of two crucial topics: waste management in coastal areas and the urgency of mangrove conservation.

Armed with insights from the practitioners, dozens of students who dubbed themselves the “Green Rangers” immediately jumped into action. This collective effort resulted in the planting of 33 mangrove seedlings in the designated coastal area.
After planting, the Green Rangers continued their mission by sweeping the area around the ecotourism site. They meticulously sorted and cleaned up scattered waste. This preventive measure was taken to ensure that the newly planted seedlings, along with the surrounding coastal ecosystem, could grow optimally without the threat of plastic pollution.

The Chief of Committee of HIMATEKK Action Day 2026, Karissa Sukma Nareswari, expressed her pride in the volunteers’ enthusiasm. “We highly appreciate the spirit of the Green Rangers. The number of participants who joined directly reached 33 people, far exceeding our initial target of only 15. Hopefully, this small step can bring a new breath of life to the coast of Surabaya,” she said.
Sustainability of Green Commitments
Although the peak of Action Day has concluded, the environmental dedication under the HOPE umbrella program will continue. Previously, pre-event activities in the form of a waste submission program (STRASH) were successfully held twice at the ITS Chemical Engineering Plaza. Currently, the committee is preparing to hold two post-event STRASH sessions scheduled to run until May 29, 2026.
Moving forward, the committee is also committed to improving the quality of education by implementing a measurable evaluation system through short quizzes (pre-tests and post-tests) in future upgrading sessions. Through this consistency, HIMATEKK ITS hopes to continuously expand the reach of its program’s benefits, striving for a sustainable social and environmental impact. (Reporter: Editorial Team)
