Campus, ITS News – The Social Development Department through the Chemical Engineering Student Association (HIMATEKK) of Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) once again demonstrated its social commitment through the Orange Education (OREN) 2026 program. Collaborating with various educational communities in Surabaya, this program aims to foster student awareness regarding the improvement of learning interest and educational quality for children.

This community service series was carried out in stages. Opening with a Welcome Party & Upgrading session on April 12, 2026, the program then continued with three main teaching stages held on April 25, May 16, and May 23, 2026. The primary focus was on children from Early Childhood Education (PAUD) to Elementary School (SD) levels.

Interactive Experiments Spark Enthusiasm

During the implementation, ITS Chemical Engineering and Food Engineering students stepped in directly as educators to assist the teaching and learning process. To prevent boredom, science materials were packaged interactively through simple, applicable experiments so that children could more easily grasp the educational concepts.

During the first teaching session at SD Muhammadiyah 9 Surabaya, in collaboration with the Pelajar Mengajar community, students were invited to learn about states of matter. They conducted hands-on experiments using simple ingredients like jelly powder and ice cubes.

A similar method was applied during the second teaching session in the Makam Rangkah area alongside the Swayanaka Surabaya community. This time, the educators introduced the concept of heterogeneous mixtures by creating simple lava lamps using water, oil, food coloring, and effervescent tablets.

The excitement continued during the third teaching session at SD Yapita Surabaya, where the concept of heterogeneous mixtures was tested again. Through a “rainbow rain” experiment, the children could visually observe that not all substances mix perfectly together.

“Through Orange Education, the educators do not merely act as teachers, but they also learn to create an interactive and enjoyable learning process, ensuring the materials are easily understood by the children,” said Naura Riyadh Rossi Mas Alis, the Person in Charge of the Orange Education 2026.

Program Evaluation and Sustainability

Despite facing several technical challenges—such as students’ scheduling conflicts with other academic activities and a relatively short preparation time—the enthusiasm of both the children and the volunteers remained high throughout the event. The committee noted that this program successfully served as an effective social laboratory for students to hone their communication skills, teamwork, and empathetic awareness outside the classroom walls.

Moving forward, HIMATEKK ITS is committed to refining program coordination, strengthening educator preparation, and expanding collaboration with educational communities across Surabaya. Through the dedication of Orange Education, ITS hopes to continue shaping a generation of students who are not only academically brilliant but also actively contribute to the community’s education.
