Shipping Business Field Study: Navigating the Pulse of Indonesia’s Maritime Trade

Surabaya, May 22, 2025 – As part of the learning enrichment initiative in the Shipping Business course, the Department of Marine Transportation Engineering at Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) organized a Field Study to explore real-world insights into the maritime business sector.

The visit took students to two of Indonesia’s most prominent shipping companies: PT Samudera Indonesia Tbk and PT Meratus Line. Both companies have played significant roles in supporting the nation’s logistics and sea transport infrastructure.

At PT Samudera Indonesia Tbk, students were introduced to the company’s legacy, its expansive logistics network, and international shipping operations. They gained valuable insights into the strategic and adaptive approaches the company employs to stay relevant in a competitive global maritime market.

Meanwhile, the visit to PT Meratus Line provided a look into the dynamics of domestic shipping. Known for its efficiency in inter-island cargo movement, Meratus emphasized the importance of integrated logistics services, modern fleet management, and innovations in maritime technology.

Beyond the presentations, students actively participated in interactive Q&A sessions, allowing them to engage directly with seasoned industry professionals. These sessions offered clarity and deeper understanding of real-life challenges, business strategies, and evolving trends within the maritime sector.
