Surabaya, December 13, 2025 – The quality of national maritime research is highly dependent on the depth of analysis and validity of references used by researchers. Recognizing this, the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) Library has taken on a strategic role by facilitating the literature needs of students in the Marine Engineering Graduate Program, particularly those from the cooperation program with the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) and the Jakarta Maritime Academy (STIP).
This commitment was realized in the form of a study visit and information literacy activity that took place on Friday (12/12) at the ITS Library Building. This activity was attended by academic leaders, namely Dr. Ir. Sujantoko, S.T., M.T. (Head of the Marine Engineering Graduate Program) and Dr.Eng. Ir. I Gusti Ngurah Sumanta Buana, S.T., M.Eng. (Head of the Graduate Program in Marine Transportation Engineering).
Institutional Synergy for Academic Excellence
The event began with a speech from the Head of the ITS Library Administration Subdivision., Bapak Yusuf Hendra Dwi Kusuma, ST., M.M. In his speech, Yusuf warmly welcomed the synergy between the faculty and the library. He emphasized that the ITS Library opens its doors wide for graduate students to explore thousands of digital and physical collections available to support a competitive research climate.
On behalf of the delegation, Sir Dr.Eng. Ir. I Gusti Ngurah Sumanta Buana or familiarly known as Bapak Buana, expressed his appreciation. In his speech, he emphasized the urgency of this activity. Considering that the participants were master’s and doctoral students, most of whom were professional practitioners, the demand to produce high-quality dissertations and theses that were published internationally was a must.
Strategies for Getting Published in International Journals
The main session of the event featured a presentation titled “How to Gain Academic Knowledge & Skills” by ITS Reference Librarian, Mrs.Eva Mursidah, S.I.Pust.
The main focus of the material presented was strategies for utilizing E-Resources (electronic resources) subscribed to by ITS to support advanced academic needs, emphasizing that for doctoral (S3) and master’s (S2) students, the ability to search international journals is no longer just a supplement, but a primary requirement.
In this interactive session, the librarian demonstrated how to access and explore giant databases such as ScienceDirect, Scopus, IEEE Xplore, Taylor and Francis, Wiley, and Emerald. He provided specific tips on how to find literature specific to the fields of marine science and meteorology among millions of articles worldwide.
The enthusiasm of the participants was evident in the interactive discussions that took place, which focused on case studies of specific literature searches in the fields of meteorology and maritime transportation. This activity is expected to not only improve the individual competencies of students, but also contribute to the strengthening of national maritime research through the academic works produced at ITS.
