Continuing to Support Sustainability, ITS Utilizes Ecoenzymes for the Environment

Several ITS leaders are preparing to pour ecoenzymes into ITS Delapan Lakes in the ITS Eco Enzym 2023 activity

ITS Campus, ITS News – As one of the institutions that actively contributes to maintaining the sustainability of the campus environment, the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) conducted an activity of pouring 200 liters of ecoenzymes in ITS Delapan Lakes, Monday (5/6). This step aims to improve water quality while being part of the UI Greenmetric 2023 event series.

The Head of the ITS Smart Eco Campus Development Unit Dr. Susi Agustina Wilujeng ST MT explained the ecoenzymes pouring activity by the ITS leaders together was called ITS Eco Enzym (IEE) 2023. This activity aims to improve water quality, both in water filtration and optimizing the quality of algae in the campus lake. “This is because the ecoenzymes that are poured will react with the biochemistry in the water,” he added.

According to Susi, the IEE 2023 activity is also an early symbol of ITS to further promote various sustainability activities in the campus environment. This is because ITS Delapan Lakes is a meeting place for several waterways in the ITS campus environment and students often use it to conduct experiments on robots or floating buildings. “Ecoenzymes are poured here (ITS Delapan Lakes, ed) to facilitate them with good water quality and efforts to protect the environment,” said the Department of Environmental Engineering lecturer.

Ecoenzymes itself is an organic liquid made from organic wet waste. Making it is also simple because it only uses waste and household tools. The waste used can come from fruit and vegetable waste mixed with sugar, cane molasses, and water, then fermented for several weeks. “Containers for fermentation also don’t need to be sterile. A used bottle is good enough,” said the bespectacled woman.

Although the process is simple, continued Susi, the benefits provided to the environment are considerable. In addition to improving water quality, ecoenzymes are also used as air filters, natural pesticides, and organic fertilizers for the agricultural sector, and can reduce the greenhouse effect. “Therefore, ecoenzymes were created as an alternative to waste management to improve environmental quality,” said Susi.

Apart from being a series of UI Greenmetric 2023 events simultaneously held on several campuses in Indonesia, IEE 2023 also coincides with the commemoration of World Environment Day and the pre-event of ITS 63rd Anniversary. This IEE 2023 activity also works with the Eco Enzym Nusantara community. “Through this activity, hopefully, that the water quality in ITS Delapan Lakes can improve, and the community, especially the ITS extended family, can be more concerned about the environment,” concluded Susi.
