Samudra Lavender Special School (SLB Samudra Lavender) in Bangkalan, Madura, became the venue for a community service program conducted by the Department of Computer Engineering, FTEIC ITS, on October 29, 2025. Led by Dr. Ahmad Zaini, S.T., M.Sc., and supported by three students—Syela Akhul Khalimi, Muhammad Habib Abdullah, and Akhmad Rizqullah R.—the team introduced Scratch Programming to SLB teachers using simple, easy-to-understand visual examples. The session was relaxed yet filled with curiosity, as block-based programming was a new experience for many participants. The main goal of the activity was to provide more accessible digital knowledge for educators in special-needs schools.
The training was initiated out of awareness that technology exposure for SLB teachers and students has been relatively limited. Scratch was therefore chosen as a light, engaging, and beginner-friendly learning medium. The material was delivered gradually, starting from understanding the interface, creating simple commands, to arranging logical sequences that produce animations. The ITS instructors emphasized that once teachers master these basics, they can design creative learning activities that encourage exploration among special-needs students, helping them build confidence in navigating the digital world.
Throughout the session, the enthusiasm was evident. Teachers actively asked questions, discussed ideas for integrating Scratch into their lessons, and practiced each demonstrated step firsthand. SLB students who attended were also entertained and intrigued as they watched animated characters move according to the programmed instructions. The classroom atmosphere instantly became more lively—filled with laughter, greetings, and joyful expressions—showing that an inclusive technological approach can be well received by all participants.
Beyond providing new experiences, the activity also sparked new aspirations. The teachers expressed hope for follow-up sessions to further strengthen their ability to use Scratch independently and perhaps develop their own teaching modules. Students dreamed of exploring other applications that could enhance their creativity and logical thinking skills. Meanwhile, the school’s management saw this activity as the starting point for a long-term collaboration to strengthen technology-based education. They are optimistic that the partnership with ITS can continue, opening opportunities for curriculum development, periodic training, and broader learning experiences for the entire SLB Samudra Lavender community.
