Established in 2017 under a Memorandum of Understanding between the Provincial Government of East Java and the State Government of Western Australia, the Western Australia – East Java Universities Consortium (WAEJUC) was formed to facilitate collaboration between universities in both regions. This cooperation enables strong partnerships in academic research and publication, as well as student and staff mobility.
In recent developments, WAEJUC has evolved into a more action-oriented platform through initiatives such as the annual Research Summit and Joint Research Program, which support interdisciplinary collaboration, research funding, and matchmaking between institutions. These programs further strengthen cooperation not only in academia but also in innovation, industry engagement, and addressing regional and global challenges
