The YSEALI Generation: Oceans workshop will educate and engage 64 rising Southeast Asian leaders on current issues in marine and coastal environments. It will focus on developing paths to policy, technical, and civil society solutions for the most serious problems.

By focusing on skills development, real-world applications, and action plans, the workshop will equip participants to prepare their communities and nations for the changing planet through a more collaborative approach.

There are three distinct components of this program: virtual exercises, a four-day workshop in Jakarta, and follow-on activities to implement post-workshop action plans and enhance ties between the United States and ASEAN.

  • Virtual Exercises (15 February-11 March 2016)

  • Workshop in Jakarta, Indonesia (17-20 March 2016)

  • Follow-on Activities, including the:

    – Issuance of seed grants for eligible teams to implement action plans (May-July 2016)

    – YSEALI Generation: Oceans U.S. Study Tour for top team (September 2016)

The YSEALI community consists of bright young leaders, 18–35 years old, from Brunei, Burma, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Laos, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam who are making a difference in their communities, countries, and the region.

The YSEALI Generations: Oceans Workshop is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and is funded through a cooperative agreement award from the Embassy of the United States in Jakarta, Indonesia. Cultural Vistas will administer the workshop and follow-on activities which are set to continue through fall 2016.
