SURABAYA, geofisika.its.ac.id – The Department of Geophysical Engineering at the Faculty of Civil, Planning, and Geo Engineering (FTSPK), Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), successfully organized an international academic forum titled the Joint Symposium Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) – Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember 2026. This collaborative event, which brought together earth science experts across borders, was held on Tuesday (23/06) in the Academic Senate Meeting Room, 2nd Floor of the ITS Rectorate Building.
The symposium represents a tangible realization of the strategic partnership between the Faculty of Science and Technology at UMS, Malaysia, and FTSPK ITS, Indonesia. Centered around the main theme “Adaptive Strategies for Changing Geological Landscapes”, the scientific forum focused on formulating adaptive solutions to address the increasingly rapid dynamics of the Earth’s shifting terrains.
In addition to the presentation of advanced scientific research, a pivotal highlight of the event was the official signing ceremony of the ITS – UMS Partnership Agreement. The agreement was formally signed by Prof. Adjie Pamungkas, S.T., M.Dev.Plg., Ph.D. (Dean of FTSPK ITS) and Prof. Ts. Gs. Dr. Rodeano Roslee, P.Geol, FIGM (representing UMS).
This agreement marks a major milestone in solidifying future academic collaborations, joint research publications, student exchanges, and integrated earth engineering projects between the two prominent institutions.

The event commenced with welcome remarks from Prof. Adjie Pamungkas, S.T., M.Dev.Plg., Ph.D., Dean of FTSPK ITS. In his address, he emphasized the critical role of international collaboration among academic institutions in fostering innovations that yield a direct impact on the global community.
Echoing this sentiment, the Head of the ITS Geophysical Engineering Department, Dr. Ir. M. Haris Miftakhul Fajar, S.T., M.Eng., delivered an opening speech highlighting that the symposium was designed to address pivotal challenges in the field of geosciences.
In general, the Joint Symposium 2026 carried four primary missions:
Actionable Climate Strategies: Developing concrete, practical, and actionable strategies to counter the impacts of global climate change.
Addressing Global Challenges: Tackling urgent hazards, ranging from natural disasters and shifting geological landscapes to long-term resource sustainability.
Integrating Earth Technologies: Combining cutting-edge earth technologies with engineering practices to comprehensively understand how geological systems respond to climate stress.
Accelerating Research & Partnerships: Serving as a bridge to connect academia, industry, and policymakers to accelerate research sharing, technology transfer, and vital long-term partnerships.

The core agenda of the symposium featured dynamic scientific presentations and discussions led by expert researchers and faculty members from both universities. The sessions covered a comprehensive and diverse array of geoscience fields, including Engineering Geology, Geochemistry, Geohazards, Geophysics, Mapping, Remote Sensing and GIS, Seismology, Stratigraphy, and Structural Geology.
