Collaborations to Improve Health and Well-being Outcomes
By advancing collaborative programs that directly benefit local communities, ITS contributes to improving public health outcomes, strengthening healthcare capacity, and fostering a culture of compassion and preparedness within society. These collective efforts have reached thousands of beneficiaries while reinforcing the link between higher education, community welfare, and sustainable development.
ITS’s commitment to advancing health outcomes is reflected through active partnerships with at least seven major health institutions, spanning local, national, and global networks. These include RSUD Dr. Soetomo, Universitas Airlangga (Unair), RS Universitas Airlangga (RSUA), the Surabaya City Health Office, the City Government of Surabaya, Rumah Sakit Terapung Ksatria Airlangga (RSTKA), and the Government of Sumenep Regency, alongside corporate partners such as PT Pelindo, PT Petrogas, and Protelindo. Together, these partnerships translate ITS’s research and community service into real-world health solutions.
Among ITS’s most notable community-driven initiatives is B-Healthy, a large-scale blood donation campaign organized by BIMITS in collaboration with the Blood Transfusion Unit of RSUD Dr. Soetomo. The event not only supports hospitals in maintaining blood supply but also cultivates awareness of public health and humanitarian responsibility among students and staff.
Continuing this spirit of service, ITS marked its 64th anniversary by organizing a mass circumcision program for underprivileged children, in partnership with RSUD Dr. Soetomo, Unair, and the Surabaya City Health Office. The event ensured medical safety and accessibility for children from low-income families, reinforcing ITS’s social responsibility in improving community welfare.
To enhance emergency response and safety literacy, ITS also implemented First Aid (P3K) Training, equipping participants with critical lifesaving skills and strengthening preparedness across campus and local communities.
Meanwhile, in the health technology domain, ITS collaborated with RS Universitas Airlangga (RSUA) to develop SahabatCAPD, a digital monitoring system for patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD). Through these sustained and multi-sectoral collaborations, ITS continues to play a central role in improving community health and well-being. By uniting academia, healthcare institutions, and government bodies under shared goals of health equity and innovation, ITS demonstrates how higher education can serve as a catalyst for resilient and sustainable public health systems—locally, nationally, and globally.
Strengthening Community Health through Inclusive Outreach and Service Programs
Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) consistently delivers extensive health outreach programs to improve physical, mental, and social well-being within local communities. Through a series of free and inclusive initiatives, ITS mobilizes its students, lecturers, and medical collaborators to address diverse health issues — from nutrition and mental health to disability care and disease prevention — ensuring that health services reach even the most disadvantaged populations.
One of ITS’s signature outreach efforts, SPE Care for Health, organized by the Society of Petroleum Engineers ITS Student Chapter, raised awareness of mental and physical health challenges through a public seminar and free medical check-ups for local residents in Keputih, Surabaya. The program provided blood sugar, blood pressure, and uric acid testing for over 100 participants, ranging from children to the elderly, especially targeting low-income families.
In conjunction with its 64th anniversary, ITS held a mass circumcision event benefiting 99 underprivileged children, combining medical service with public health education and religious observance.
ITS students also contributed through KKN FSAD’s “Beraksi Sosial 3.0”, an interactive learning project that educated elementary students on balanced nutrition through six sessions of engaging visual lessons and physical activities.
Beyond direct health interventions, ITS’s Biomedical Engineering Community Service Teamdevelop adaptive assistive technologies — including a toileting wheelchair for individuals with disabilities and prosthetic arms for amputees — in collaboration with Griya Orthocare and Yayasan Pendidikan Autis Mutiara Hati Surabaya. These innovations promote independence, dignity, and improved quality of life among people with disabilities.
To extend its outreach further, the ITS Peduli Sehat program program provided free eye examinations, medical check-ups, blood donations, and consultations with health professionals for the surrounding community.
Through these initiatives, ITS continues to serve as a key driver of community health and well-being, combining academic expertise, student engagement, and strong institutional collaboration to create sustainable, equitable health outcomes for all.
Shared Sports Facilities to Promote Health, Inclusivity, and Cultural Exchange
Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) actively promotes community health, inclusivity, and well-being by opening its sports facilities to both internal and external users. Through the official platform fasor.its.ac.id, the public can rent and use a wide range of facilities — from indoor and outdoor futsal fields, semi-indoor basketball courts, football fields, badminton halls, tennis courts, athletic tracks, to volleyball courts. This open-access system ensures that sports become a shared space for recreation, health improvement, and social engagement within the broader Surabaya community.
Beyond the Fasor complex, ITS also provides free access to open public spaces across campus that support physical activity and a healthy lifestyle. This inclusivity is reflected in initiatives such as Eco Running SRE ITS 2024, a five-kilometer community run organized by the Society of Renewable Energy (SRE) ITS. The event utilized scenic public routes across the ITS campus — starting from Taman Segitiga ITS, passing Bundaran Teknik Elektro, Asrama Mahasiswa ITS, Taman Vivat ITS, Science Technopark, Graha Sepuluh Nopember, and finishing at Bundaran ITS.
These routes, open to both students and the general public, demonstrate how ITS’s green and pedestrian-friendly environment doubles as a public wellness infrastructure.
In addition to community-based events, ITS also plays an active role in international sports collaboration. In 2024, ITS served as the proud host of the Men’s Indoor Handball Competition at the 21st ASEAN University Games (AUG). The event brought together athletes from across Southeast Asia, turning ITS into a stage for competition, friendship, and cross-cultural understanding.
Through these inclusive and well-integrated initiatives, ITS exemplifies how higher education institutions can utilize shared sports facilities to foster physical health, community connection, and global solidarity—while reinforcing its role as a campus that is open, sustainable, and health-oriented.
Promoting Sexual and Reproductive Health through Education, Prevention, and Collaboration
Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) actively promotes students’ sexual and reproductive health through accessible education and preventive initiatives that foster awareness, protection, and well-being. In response to increasing reproductive health issues, particularly cervical cancer and genital warts, ITS organized a free webinar under the title ITS Medics to enhance students’ understanding of sexual and reproductive health care.
The session addressed early detection and prevention of infections caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), explaining key symptoms, diagnostic methods such as IVA, HPV, and Pap smear tests, and the importance of vaccination. Participants also learned about responsible sexual behavior, consistent treatment options, and the need to avoid stigma and discrimination toward those affected. This initiative not only provided health education but also encouraged preventive action among the student community.
Complementing this health education effort, ITS collaborated with Universitas Airlangga (Unair) hold a free event,Socialization on Prevention and Handling of Sexual Violence (PPKS), emphasizing the importance of a safe and respectful academic environment. By increasing awareness of respectful behavior and boundaries, this initiative indirectly contributes to preventing sexually transmitted infections through the promotion of consent, mutual respect, and personal safety.
Through these synergized programs—integrating reproductive health education with behavioral awareness—ITS ensures that students have access to comprehensive sexual and reproductive health information and education. Collaborations with medical experts and institutions such as Universitas Airlangga strengthen ITS’s commitment to creating a safe, informed, and health-conscious academic community.
Strengthening Student Mental Health through Comprehensive Support and Awareness
Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) provides comprehensive and accessible mental health support services to its students, integrating preventive education, counseling access, and awareness programs that promote emotional resilience and well-being. These initiatives combine institutional commitment, student engagement, and collaboration with professional psychologists and external partners to foster a healthy academic environment where students feel supported and empowered.
At the core of ITS’s mental health framework is the Student Health Care Center (SHCC), established in collaboration with the Ikatan Orang Tua Mahasiswa (Ikoma) ITS. SHCC offers free access to early-stage psychological consultation and mental health assistance for students, allowing them to book confidential sessions with professional psychologists.
The center plays a vital role in identifying the root causes of stress, anxiety, or burnout among students, ensuring timely intervention and care.
Complementing the center’s services, ITS also organizes educational programs such as the “Working with Gen Z” talk show, which highlights the importance of maintaining mental well-being amid workplace and academic challenges.
To further raise mental health awareness, ITS actively promotes campus-wide initiatives like the Mental Health Festival (MenFest 2.0)organized by the ITS Sexual Violence Prevention and Handling Task Force (Satgas PPKS) and BEM ITS. Under the theme “Breaking Chains, Building Resilience,” this event empowers students to recognize early signs of mental distress, seek professional help, and support peers who may be struggling.
Similarly, the SPE Care for Health seminar, hosted by the Society of Petroleum Engineers ITS Student Chapter, provided insights into emotional regulation, sleep hygiene, and the prevention of cyberbullying—emphasizing how mental health directly impacts personal productivity and social relationships.
In partnership with Pertamina Subholding Upstream Regional Jawa, ITS also launched a collaborative program to help Generation Z students balance ambition with mental well-being, encouraging self-awareness and practical coping strategies to prevent burnout. Meanwhile, ITS’s Mental Health Socialization Program, conducted jointly by the Medical Center, Geomatics Engineering Department, and HIMAGE ITS, provided students with interactive stress management sessions designed to help them relax, recharge, and maintain psychological stability throughout their studies.
Through these free and accessible programs, ITS ensures that mental health support is not only available but also actively promoted as a shared responsibility across its academic community. By integrating institutional counseling services with proactive awareness campaigns and inter-organizational collaboration, ITS continues to nurture a compassionate and mentally resilient student environment.
Smoke-Free Campus Policy for a Sustainable and Healthy Environment
Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) has officially adopted a smoke-free campus policy as part of its commitment to creating a sustainable, healthy, and environmentally responsible academic environment. This policy is formalized through the Rector’s Statement Letter No. T/38539/IT2/TU.00.08/2021, which outlines ITS’s institutional dedication to sustainability principles across social, environmental, and economic dimensions in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The document explicitly mandates the realization of ITS as a smoke-free campus area, as stated in Chapter III, Section on Environment, Point (g), where ITS encourages the establishment of a campus that is entirely free from smoking activities. This commitment forms part of a broader environmental and health-conscious policy framework that guides ITS operations and community behavior.
The smoke-free policy aims to protect the health and well-being of all campus members—students, faculty, staff, and visitors—by ensuring clean air quality and preventing exposure to the harmful effects of tobacco smoke. It also supports the university’s goal to cultivate a learning environment that promotes productivity, inclusivity, and sustainable lifestyles.
As a tangible reflection of this policy, smoking is strictly prohibited across all academic buildings, laboratories, dormitories, green areas, and public facilities within the ITS campus area. The policy is reinforced through campus-wide signage, awareness campaigns, and integration into university regulations concerning health, environment, and student conduct. These measures ensure consistent enforcement and active participation of the entire academic community in maintaining a smoke-free environment.
Fostering Mental Health and Emotional Well-Being among ITS Staff through Integrated Support and Awareness Initiatives
By 2024, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) had strengthened its institutional commitment to promoting mental health and emotional well-being among its staff through a comprehensive set of programs integrating psychological services, emotional intelligence development, and faith-based approaches to resilience. These initiatives reflect ITS’s understanding that the success of an academic institution depends not only on intellectual excellence but also on the holistic well-being of its human resources.
At the core of this commitment is the Student Health Care Center (SHCC)—a dedicated facility established in collaboration with the ITS Parents Association (Ikoma ITS). While primarily aimed at students, the SHCC extends free access to professional psychological consultations for lecturers and education personnel, offering preventive and early intervention support for stress and burnout. Staff can book confidential sessions with certified psychologists to address mental health challenges and improve emotional balance in their personal and professional lives.
Complementing this service-based support, ITS also actively promotes mental health awareness and emotional intelligence within the workplace. The webinar “Optimizing Emotional Intelligence to Foster Psychological Well-Being at Work” engaged academic and administrative staff in strategies for emotional regulation, empathy, and resilience—key competencies for maintaining harmony in a high-performance environment.
The institution’s culture of mental wellness was further reinforced through the Improvement and Innovation Award (IAA) Forum 2024, hosted by ITS in collaboration with Pertamina. The forum included a focused dialogue titled “Ambition vs. Mental Health for Gen Z,” delivered by psychologist Dr. Mira Tripuspita. The session explored the psychological dynamics of innovation, emphasizing that creativity and productivity thrive when mental well-being is nurtured. As underscored by ITS leadership during the forum, “Innovation can only be achieved when the innovators are happy.”
To holistically address staff welfare, ITS also integrates spiritual and communal dimensions into its mental health promotion. The annual Halal Bihalal 1445 Hijriah event, themed “Living Healthy and Working as an Expression of Gratitude,” encouraged staff to align physical and mental health through faith-based reflection and togetherness—creating a sense of shared purpose and emotional balance across the campus community.
Through these integrated and inclusive initiatives—ranging from professional counseling and workplace education to cultural and spiritual engagement—ITS ensures that mental health support is not peripheral but central to its institutional values. The university’s proactive approach demonstrates that academic excellence and emotional well-being are mutually reinforcing pillars of a sustainable and compassionate academic environment.
