During the months of August to December 2020, ITS, in collaboration with PT Kreasi Mandiri Wintor Indonesia (KMWI), conducted an innovative research and development of multipurpose rural transportation vehicles, AMMDes, to use renewable and environmentally friendly fuel, CPO (Crude Palm Oil) Biodiesel and gas fuel, using DDF Technology (Diesel Dual Fuel).
The main innovative feature in this innovation research is the application of DDF technology using an electronic control unit (ECU) that is programmable and integrated with vehicle components. This programmable ECU is used to adjust the work output of the vehicle engine to the received load, in order to maintain performance and emission numbers, while still using alternative fuels. This programmable ECU controls the amount of intake of CNG fuel and air into the engine through the gas injector and the speed of the electric supercharger, while continuously examining engine operating conditions data through feedback from sensors installed in the engine, such as Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) and Hall sensor, to detect engine RPM. Before performing modifications to the vehicle, it is necessary to make preparations such as initial measurements, layout planning and design, DDF engine test drive, ECU programming and settings, and others. Therefore, these activities were conducted in the ITS PUI SKO and STP Otomotif facilities, which has the adequate equipment and tools to support vehicle research and testing, such as engine power and torque measurement using the Dynotest engine, vehicle weight measurement, and emission testing. Furthermore, other works such as modification of the vehicle chassis, and the construction of brackets to mount the gas fuel tanks were also carried out in the PUI SKO ITS and STP Otomotif facilities.
