Hubless Bike ITS (HUBBITS), an environmentally friendly hubless bike with a futuristic and ergonomic design

ITS Campus, ITS News – Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) continues to innovate in supporting the Republic of Indonesia government program, towards Net Zero Emissions by 2060. At this moement, ITS has recreated an environmentally friendly bicycle innovation named Hubless Bike ITS (HUBBITS).

The Head of ITS Automotive Control System Science and Technology Center (PUI-SKO), Ir Mohammad Khoirul Effendi ST MScEng PhD, explained that HUBBITS has five superior features that are smart and attractive. The first feature is wireless charging which is installed on the bicycle rim and bicycle parking dock. This feature allows HUBBITS to charge when not in use.

The second feature that is worth noting is the selection of airless tires. Tires are specifically designed to overcome the discomfort problems, often arise while using conventional tires, which are susceptible to sharp objects and extreme changes in tire pressure. With these tires, HUBBITS offers a safer and more comfortable driving experience.

Next, the third feature is hubless. As the name suggests, this feature means that bicycle tires do not use axles and spokes. This feature allows HUBBITS to only rely on the frame surrounding the rim as its support. “This can improve the handling and stability of electric bicycles when it is used,” the lecturer at ITS Mechanical Engineering Department said.

Meanwhile, in the latest developments, HUBBITS also presents interesting module features. In the future, this module will undergo further development, including integration with an application that allows users to monitor position, control the system, and check the condition of the bicycle battery before use.

Finally, Khoirul explained that the fifth feature adopted by HUBBITS is design optimization by combining artificial intelligence, namely Backpropagation Neural Network (BPNN) and Genetic Algorithm (GA). With this feature, the bicycle frame design is considered as light and ergonomic because it can withstand the maximum weight of the rider.

Khoirul added, HUBBITS is the result of research from the Innovation and Downstream Research program of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) Higher Education for Technology Innovation (HETI) Fund. This research, entitled Electric Bicycle Ecosystem Development on the ITS Campus, is the result of collaboration between lecturers and students from various departments in ITS who are members of ITS Automotive Science Techno Park (STP) cluster.

This bicycle was produced to complement the electric vehicle ecosystem that is already present in ITS, such as electric buses, electric cars, i-Cars, and electric scooters. This initiative is part of ITS implementation, namely Advancing Humanity, which confirms ITS’s commitment to advancing the quality of life and development of civilization.

Through various HUBBITS feature innovations, this design is targeted to be an inspiration for the industrial sector in Indonesia. In line with ITS’ commitment to advancing the quality of human life and the development of civilization, it is expected that HUBBITS will be the first step in changing the transportation paradigm to be more environmentally friendly and efficient.

“I look forward that the success of HUBBITS can encourage similar energy-saving development efforts throughout the country, towards achieving the Net Zero Emission target by 2060 and a better future for our earth,” he concluded. (ITS Public Relations)
