ITS Campus, ITS News – Students of ITS once again recorded achievements on the national scene. Namely by transforming leather waste into beautiful and attractive casual shoes, so that it managed to pocket the first place in the prestigious Indonesia Footwear Creative Competition (IFCC) 2020.

 

Gede Arya Daiva Daniswara, a student of ITS Industrial Product Design Department (Despro) class of 2018 who successfully stretched the concept of recycling in the design of his product titled Revive Runner, the Upcycled Leather Waste Casual Sneaker.

IFCC itself is a competition held by the Indonesian Competition Industry Development Center (BPIPI) under the Ministry of Industry to provide space for creative industry players in Indonesia to work in the footwear sector, as well as introduce them to the development of fashion and footwear industry.

Daiva, his nickname, who has been in the world of shoe design since high school admitted, got inspiration from the results of his exploration of leather waste left over from the Indonesian gaming industry. “Leather waste that ends up piling up in landfills or being destroyed by burning can be a threat to the environment,” he explained.

Departing from these problems, Daiva strives to increase the life cycle of skin waste and revive materials into functional products through his project. “The leather waste is cut into modular shapes without using glue or stitches to connect,” added this young man from Surabaya.

Revive Runner itself, Daiva continued, has a sleek, minimalist, and simple design where the product is considered suitable for users who are looking for quality eco-friendly shoes. In addition, it is also suitable for daily activities and has a beautiful minimalist model.

In the five months since March, Daiva has faced challenges that sometimes come from beyond his expectations. Starting from how the application of waste skin that fits the design, to various mentoring activities to improve Daiva’s ability as a designer.

In front of the judges who are experts in the world of footwear industry such as Footwear Designer brand PUMA Yadi Aditya, Indonesia Trend Forecasting Isti Dhaniswari, and CEO Pijak Bumi Rowland Asfales, Daiva is required to give the impression and purpose of the design he made. “When the presentation was broadcast live on Youtube, I felt amazingly nervous,” said the eldest of the two brothers.

Announced as the first winner through Youtube channel in early September, Daiva said he was happy for his achievement. Thanks to this competition, he began to understand how the mindset of expert designers ranging from how he sought ideas, the right research to how to present his designs.

Going forward, instagram account owners @halftoothdesigns hope to be able to create better and more meaningful designs for a wider audience. He also wants to be able to penetrate the international race at the next opportunity. “Show your work, with it we will be able to get a lot of experience and also enter that can make our work better in the future,” Daiva concluded.
