Dr. Ir Syamsul Arifin MT demonstrated an affordable online learning method which recommended

ITS Campus, ITS News – in connection with the online learning policy due to the Covid-19 pandemic, all educational institutions are required to perform the learning by utilizing the online communication technology. In this regard, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) lecturers Dr. Ir Syamsul Arifin MT provided efficient learning media recommendations and able to minimize the cost of internet access incurred.

Syamsul said that his idea went from many complaints expressed by students and lecturers in online-based lectures. Mainly, concerning video conference (ViCon) as a learning method. “Learning through ViCon is considered consuming a lot of internet data usage,” said this lecturer of the Department of Physics Engineering.

To validate the problem, Syamsul explained the rough calculations he made. For example, the student takes 20 units of credit semester (SKS) in one semester, in one month, the student takes approximately 66.67 hours for the study. An hour is about to require 1 GB of data usage priced Rp 3,820. “Then, the student can spend about Rp 254,000 per month,” he explained.

The doctor in the field of education technology felt that the nominal is quite expensive for the student, especially those who have economic difficulties in the situation of emergency response today. “Not to mention if students have to learn with Learning Management System (LMS) who have to explore the internet to do the task from the lecturer, surely the cost needed will increase,” he continued.

With this, Syamsul advised applying the transfer of the operational costs of the unused educational institutions to the aid of credit subsidies for students who need for online learning connections. “Referring to this, the circular letter of the Directorate General of Higher Education number 302/E. E2/KR/2020 as the basis of budget policy for universities,” he said.

The team of curriculum development and learning of higher education Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud) explained, in online learning is known two modes, synchronous mode using ViCon and asynchronous mode by using LMS. “Its effective for fully online learning combines 40 percent of synchronous mode and 60 percent of asynchronous mode,” he explained.

Syamsul offered the optimal setting option of online learning with both modes. Beginning with the self-learning through the teaching materials in the form of text, graphics, images, audio, and video are documented in the form of audiovisual with the size of the file is not too large. “This method is similar to when the lecturer explains in class,” he explained.

The man who served as the Review Teaching Grand P3AI-ITS said that he has been using this audiovisual learning media since the year 2006 with ITS Share page. The material is later discussed in class or as an initial ingredient in the task. “Learning with models like this makes students happier, it could be seen from the collected assignment are very varied and excellent,” he said.

Furthermore, Syamsul said, after, given the form of audio-visual content, students can directly interact with the lecturer through ViCon with the to clarify, strengthening understanding, and discussing with lecturers and also friends in class. “With this mode, lecturers can motivate students to continue to study in the present moment,” he continued.

For last year students who do not need to take experiments in the laboratory, Syamsul advised using the Office 365 program from ITS, which has a TEAM application to conduct discussion and editing of the final assignment report document with the lecturer. “The plan, I will make a video tutorial using this app to share for the lecturers who if needed,” he said.

Syamsul hoped that during this online study no longer a burden and make students feel at home to study at home. Also, with some of the proposals it provides, the expectation of a fellow lecturer can immediately increase the ability to use e-learning. “The most important of these are hopefully in situations like this, we all stay healthy and happy productively at home,” the concluded is full of hope.(tri/rev/ITS Public Relations)
