Surabaya, October 9, 2025 – Following the success of its previous mental health seminar for students, the Department of Computer Engineering, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), continued its series of well-being programs with a socialization session titled “Introduction to Psychological First Aid (PFA)” for lecturers and educational staff. The session was delivered by dr. Zain Budi Syulthoni, Sp.KJ, focusing on enhancing the academic community’s ability to provide initial support for individuals experiencing psychological distress.
In his presentation, Dr. Zain explained that Psychological First Aid (PFA) is an empathy-based initial intervention aimed at helping individuals who are experiencing stress, anxiety, or emotional crisis. This approach emphasizes the importance of empathetic listening, ensuring safety, and helping individuals rediscover their inner strengths.
The session also highlighted research findings from the University of Paris, which revealed a high prevalence of stress and depression among university students. This data underscores the importance of strengthening mental health literacy among educators and academic staff. With a solid understanding of PFA, educators are expected to recognize early signs of emotional distress and respond appropriately with empathy and care.
Beyond conceptual explanations, participants were introduced to the three core principles of PFA: Look, Listen, and Link. These principles involve observing signs of crisis, listening without judgment, and connecting individuals to relevant professional help or support services. Through light simulations and real-life case examples, lecturers and staff learned practical ways to respond calmly and supportively in actual situations.
Dr. Zain concluded the session with an inspiring message that resonated deeply with participants, emphasizing the importance of self-awareness in maintaining mental health:
“Mental health is the journey of self-discovery and growth.”
This activity marks a concrete step by the Department of Computer Engineering ITS in fostering a mentally healthy academic environment—one where every member of the community supports one another to build a safe, inclusive, and psychologically caring campus culture.
