Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) continues to support the development of a sustainable mining sector in Indonesia. This commitment was demonstrated through a guest lecture organized by the Mining Engineering Department in collaboration with PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) on Wednesday, 12 November 2025, at Grha Sepuluh Nopember.

ITS Rector Prof. Dr. (HC) Ir. Bambang Pramujati, ST., MScEng., Ph.D. warmly welcomed the collaboration, emphasizing the importance of exposing students to practical insights from the mining industry. “This allows the ITS academic community to see real implementation and industry perspectives on mining in Indonesia,” he stated.

He further highlighted that cooperation with PTFI will be strengthened through academic programs and applied research, aligning with ITS’s commitment to sustainable and environmentally friendly mining. The initiative also supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4 (Quality Education) and Goal 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure).

Serving as the keynote speaker, PTFI President Director Tony Wenas presented a comprehensive overview of PTFI’s mining operations from upstream to downstream. He also explained the company’s environmental management efforts, including tailings and overburden handling, land reclamation covering hundreds of hectares, and waste management through reduce, reuse, recycle (3R) programs.

Wenas noted that PTFI operates under a Special Mining Business License (IUPK) covering 9,946 hectares in Papua, with supporting operational areas spanning 116,783 hectares. Since the 2018 divestment, the Government of Indonesia holds 51.24 percent of PTFI shares, a milestone that enhances national independence and value creation in the mining industry.

Financially, PTFI’s contributions to the state are significant. Between 2019 and 2024, total state revenue from PTFI reached approximately USD 14.5 billion, three times greater than the share received by Freeport-McMoRan (FCX). Beyond financial contributions, PTFI also delivers broad social impact, particularly in Papua. Through the Nemangkawi Mining Institute (IPN), the company provides vocational training programs, with 92 percent of participants being indigenous Papuans. “This step ensures that the benefits are felt more evenly across communities,” Wenas concluded.

The guest lecture marked another milestone in ITS’s mission to advance sustainable mining education and strengthen collaboration between academia and industry for national development
