Laboratorium ini dipimpin oleh Prof. Dr. Ir. Mahfud, DEA sebagai kepala laboratorium. Memiliki ruangan dan fasilitas yang cukup memadai untuk penelitian khususnya yang terkait dengan reaksi kimia dan konversi biomassa.
Adapun contoh topik penelitian dalam laboratorium ini antara lain:
- Studi pengaruh rasio mol reaktan dan waktu reaksi pada proses metanolisis untuk pembuatan metal ester sulfonat sebagai emulsifier dengan agen pensulfonasi NaHSO3. (Study of the influence of mole ratio of reactants and reaction time on the process for the manufacture of metal metanolisis ester sulfonate as an emulsifier with agents pensulfonasi NaHSO3).
- Rekristalisasi garam rakyat untuk meningkatkan kualitas (Recrystallization of salt people to improve the quality).
- Kinetika reaksi tranesterifikasi minyak sawit dengan katalis padat (Tranesterifikasi reaction kinetics of palm oil with the solid catalyst).
- Uji slow release pada urea (Test the slow release urea).
- Perengkahan katalitik untuk menghasilkan biofuel dengan katalis ni-mo (Catalytic cracking catalysts to produce biofuel with ni-mo).
- Pembuatan dietil eter dengan proses reaktif distilasi (Preparation of diethyl ether by reactive distillation process).
Dan masih banyak lagi jurnal ilmiah yang telah di terbitkan oleh unit laboratorium ini.

Biomassa lignoselulosa adalah bahan baku yang sangat menjanjikan untuk membuat bahan bakar terbarukan. Biomassa ini merupakan substrat substansial untuk produksi bioetanol, produk biochemical yang mana ketersediaan dan kelimpahan bahan dapat diperbaharui dan tidak akan bersaing dengan bahan pangan dan pakan ternak. Lignoselulosa sebagian besar mengandung campuran polimer karbohidrat seperti selulosa dan hemiselulosa serta lignin. Menurut technavio.com, ukuran pasar biofuel berbasis bahan baku lignoselulosa berpotensi tumbuh sebesar USD 7,83 miliar selama 2020-2024, dan momentum pertumbuhan pasar akan meningkat selama periode perkiraan.
Berdasarkan data supply and demand selulosa bahwa Indonesia banyak mengekspor selulosa dari negara lain untuk memenuhi kebutuhan industri di Indonesia. Sedangkan selulosa, hemiselulosa dan lignin dapat diproduksi dari sabut kelapa. Potensi produksi kelapa Indonesia mencapai 15 miliar butir kelapa per tahun sehingga Indonesia mampu menghasilkan sabut kelapa sekitar 1,875 juta ton per tahun. Ketersediaan sabut kelapa yang cukup banyak tersebut saat ini belum dimanfaatkan semaksimal mungkin. Dengan adanya permintaan pasar yang cukup tinggi baik dari luar negeri maupun dalam negeri maka Indonesia perlu membangun industri pengolahan biomassa dari sabut kelapa.
Oleh karena itu, pabrik fraksinasi lignoselulosa dari sabut kelapa ini didirikan dengan tujuan untuk membantu masalah tersebut, dimana pabrik ini akan dioperasikan secara batch dengan 3 kali running selama 24 jam dalam 330 hari per tahunnya dan berkapasitas produksi sebesar 699,4511 ton/tahun. Dari kapasitas tersebut dibutuhkan bahan baku sabut kelapa sebesar 1650 ton/tahun, larutan NaOH sebanyak 315.150 ton/tahun, larutan H2SO4 sebanyak 539.550 ton/tahun, membutuhkan power sebesar 228.349 Hp dan membutuhkan panas sebesar 12,593,653.234 kJ. Pabrik ini akan didirikan di Jalan Raya Lingkar Timur Buduran Sidoarjo dengan luas tanah dan bangunan adalah 14000 m2.
Pendirian pabrik ini diencakan dimulai di tahun 2022 dan dapat selesai tahun 2024. Dimana proses fraksinasi lignoselulosa terdiri dari 3 proses antara lain yaitu proses pretreatment (metode steam explosion), proses delignifikasi dan proses presipitasi.
Dari perhitungan analisa ekonomi didapatkan laju pengembalian modal (IRR) pabrik ini sebesar 30.81% dengan tingkat suku bunga bank 9,95% per tahun. Sementara itu, waktu pengembalian modal (POT) adalah 3 tahun 5 bulan dan titik impas (BEP) sebesar 19%. Untuk mendirikan pabrik fraksinasi lignoselulosa dari sabut kelapa dibutuhkan biaya produksi total per tahunnya sebanyak Rp. 52,527,818,883.6 dengan biaya investasi total (TCI) sebanyak Rp. 132,231,158,918. Jika dipertimbangkan dari aspek analisis ekonomi serta teknis, pabrik fraksinasi lignoselulosa dari sabut kelapa dengan metode steam explosion ini layak didirikan.
