SDG 16: PEACE, JUSTICE, AND STRONG INSTITUTIONS

“SDG 16 and 17 explore some of the underlying factors that are needed in order to ensure delivery of the other SDGs. Peace and Justice go hand in hand – and indeed are vital for equity between people and countries. Supporting this we need our institutions to be strong enough to maintain a focus on delivering the SDGs. This can range from individual justice – eradicating modern slavery and people trafficking – to ensuring that our countries have the evidence base needed to react appropriately to crises.”

University Governance Measures

Strengthening Elected Representation in University Governance

ITS upholds democratic representation and shared leadership within its institutional governance. The university ensures that members of its highest decision-making bodies include elected representatives from various academic and administrative communities — encompassing students, faculty, and staff. Through the Majelis Wali Amanat (MWA) and other participatory councils, ITS emphasizes accountability and inclusivity in leadership transitions. News such as the appointment of new vice rectors for the 2024–2029 term and the active role of the ITS Alumni Association (IKA ITS) illustrate how elected representation remains central to university governance. These processes guarantee transparency, encourage open dialogue, and ensure that decisions reflect diverse perspectives within the academic ecosystem. Such democratic participation demonstrates ITS’s strong alignment with reinforcing the values of representation, fairness, and institutional integrity across all levels of leadership.

Recognizing an Independent and Active Students’ Union

The ITS leadership presented a Certificate of Appreciation to the Chemical Engineering Student Association for winning the Social Contribution category in the 2024 Ormawa Awards

ITS fully recognizes and supports the independence of student organizations as a vital component of participatory academic life. The university provides space for autonomous student unions, faculty-level BEM (student executive boards), and campus-wide associations to voice aspirations, organize initiatives, and contribute to decision-making. Events such as the Ormawa Awards celebrate student leadership achievements, while workshops like the BEM FSAD’s Public Relations Training reflect the proactive and independent functioning of these bodies. Additionally, ITS facilitates democratic participation through campus voting events such as the establishment of dedicated polling stations during national elections. This institutional framework promotes freedom of expression, leadership development, and civic engagement among students. By maintaining an open environment for student representation and collaboration, ITS ensures that its students are not only academically competent but also socially responsible, reflecting the spirit of SDG 16.2.2 on empowering independent student unions and youth participation in governance.

ITS demonstrates a clear commitment to stakeholder engagement through structured collaboration with local governments, communities, and civil society organizations. The university formalizes these partnerships via Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), community service programs (Abmas and KKN), and policy development workshops. For instance, ITS collaborated with the Morowali Utara government to digitalize public services, conducted community digitalization programs in Gresik, and organized a policy brief training to enhance evidence-based policymaking. Additionally, ITS partnered with religious and civic institutions such as PWNU Jawa Timur in holding national forums to strengthen social harmony and public awareness. These initiatives highlight ITS’s systematic approach to identifying key external stakeholders and involving them in sustainable development dialogues. By aligning education, research, and community engagement with local needs, ITS exemplifies SDG 16.2.3’s vision of inclusive partnerships that drive transparent and responsive governance.
