ITS Campus, ITS News — Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) received a visit from the Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Diktisaintek) of the Republic of Indonesia, Prof. Stella Christie PhD, Tuesday (27/5). This visit was in the context of a strategic discussion on the direction of ITS academic research and development in the Leadership Meeting Room, ITS Rectorate Building.
Moderated by Vice Rector IV for Research, Innovation, Cooperation, and Alumni ITS Prof. Agus Muhamad Hatta ST MSi PhD, this discussion highlighted the strategic role of ITS in accelerating the shift from a research-based university to an innovative university. He explained that ITS has built Science Techno Park (STP) as a hub for innovation development and downstreaming of research products.
According to the professor who is familiarly called Hatta, STP ITS is supported by four main clusters, namely maritime, information technology and robotics, creative industry, and sustainable technology. These four clusters are designed to integrate research results with the real needs of industry and society, while expanding the reach of ITS collaboration nationally and globally. “We want STP to be a concrete bridge between campus innovation and the industrial world,” explained the Professor of Engineering Physics ITS .

Responding to this, the deputy minister who is usually called Stella expressed her appreciation for ITS’s achievements in creating innovations based on local and national potential. She considered ITS to have a strategic position in supporting the country’s priorities, especially in the fields of maritime, food security, clean energy, and medical devices. “With the wealth of biodiversity and maritime resources, Indonesia must excel in this field and ITS has an important role in realizing it,” she said.
Furthermore, Stella emphasized the importance of downstreaming research so that research results do not stop at scientific publications, but can produce products that have a real impact. She emphasized that the success of research can also be measured by its contribution to the birth of innovation and start-ups that drive the wheels of the national economy.
On the same occasion, Secretary of the ITS Institute Prof. Dr. Umi Laili Yuhana SKom MSc also said that regulation is the main challenge in the downstreaming process. According to her, many ITS research products are ready to enter the industry, but are still hampered by aspects of legality and measuring economic value. She hopes that the ministry can provide concrete guidance and support in the process.

Various innovations and directions of ITS research development presented in this discussion also support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals , especially point 4 on Quality Education. ITS is committed to creating an inclusive, technology-based learning ecosystem, and encouraging research and development that can increase the capacity of human resources, both in the academic environment and the wider community.
This discussion is a learning space and mapping of ITS’s leading research that has economic potential. The focus is on encouraging campus innovation so that it can be commercialized and have a real impact. This is in line with the direction of the Ministry of Education and Technology which emphasizes downstreaming of research and the involvement of industry in its development.
Closing the discussion, Stella conveyed the commitment of Kemdiktisaintek to support ITS to become an entrepreneurship-based university. She emphasized that research is the main foundation and the ministry will strengthen the research funding scheme, STP development, and strategic collaboration to support innovation downstreaming. “We want to ensure that research results do not stop in the laboratory, but really have an impact on society,” she said optimistically.
