Kora-Kora, Ship Stability Detection Mobile Apps to Reduce the Risk of Accidents for Fishermen of the World

The use of smartphones through applications has had a significant impact and benefits in overcoming various kinds of problems. The STKK DRPM ITS Research Center, University College London, and Pattimura University created vessel stability detection technology for fishermen and sailors worldwide through mobile apps.
“As a maritime country, Indonesia is ranked in the top three with the highest death rate in the fishing industry. This condition is due to monitoring boat stability, poor ship hull design, and a culture of safety in the middle of the fishing community that is not good,” said Prof. Ir I Ketut Aria Pria Utama, MSc, STKK DRPM ITS Researcher.
This is what underlies the creation of the Kora-Kora mobile app, as an effort to reduce the death rate and risk of accidents for fishermen and sailors.
The ITS Professor, usually called Prof. IKAP, also said that fishermen generally do not have enough funds to provide good motion sensors to support the stability of their cables. In fact, the farther a small fishing boat goes into deep waters, the more fish there are, and the more knowledge is needed about the ship’s stability conditions.
For this reason, the collaboration between Indonesian and British researchers has created a mobile application that will warn fishermen about the stability and security conditions of the vessel.

“The Kora-Kora application can be installed on any affordable smartphone device, which is active or has battery power,” explained Prof. Ir I Ketut Aria Pria Utama, MSc, ITS Professor as well as a team of experts at the Center for Science and Technology Research, Marine and Earth Sciences, Directorate of Research and Community Service, ITS.
Prof. IKAP explained before the ship goes to sea, the smartphone is placed on the deck, and the application is turned on. When people enter, the boat will shake. Then an indication will appear on the smartphone, whether the ship is stable or not, with the contents of the number of people and their equipment. This application can also detect whether too many people are on the ship or in the wrong sitting position.
In addition, this application can also detect how many marine products are obtained and made on board. The application will display whether the catch was excessive or not. Because overloading also affects safety.
Prof. IKAP said the Kora-Kora application would be available in Indonesian and English. This application will be coordinated with the Ministry of KKP and socialization with ITS.
Meanwhile, BT Chair of Maritime Engineering UCL Prof. Giles Thomas explained the impact of this application is significant for the world community, especially Bangladesh and Singapore, with the highest death rates.
