Advanced Research Facilities

To develop a strong research culture among academicians, ITS provides several complete and up-to-date facilities. ITS has more than 184 laboratories spread across 7 faculties that support research at the lecture level until further collaboration to create research programs that give an impact to the community. To manage research activities, ITS formed the Directorate of Research and Community Service (DRPM) as tasks and functions implementer of ITS in the field of Research and Community Service. In addition, DRPM also supervises three leading laboratories which are supporting instruments for researchers to conduct research. The three leading laboratories include:

Advanced Research Facilities

The Energy & Environmental Laboratory is an ITS Leading Center that is managed directly by the Directorate of Research and Community Service (DRPM) ITS. This laboratory has the main task to support ITS main research and provide consulting, analysis and training services. This laboratory was built in mid-2009 and in the same year an inspection of the building and equipment was conducted by official examiners (commissioning). In March 2010 the laboratory was fully operational. To support research needs, Energy & Environmental Laboratory has built a second laboratory in the ITS Research Center Building with a around 2400 m areas.

The Energy and environment laboratory is equipped with sophisticated analysis instruments. The main instrumentation in the Laboratory of Energy and Enviromental Studies includes SEM-EDX, XRD, AFM, ICP-OES, XRF, HRMS, HPLC, GC, etc that related to research needs in the alternative energy field. In addition, this laboratory is also equipped with field survey equipment such as a lab-car with the ability to do water, soil and air quality analyzes such as pH, DO, nitrate ions, nitrite ions, sulfates, ammonia and collrides, water conductivity, CO, CO2, NOx, SOx, humidity, air dust content, vibration and noise gauges, explosion-proof vibrations, cetane and octane number gauges, BBG dew point measuring devices. The list of services that can be utilized from this laboratory is research, analysis and measurement services, training, and consultation. Research services at the Energy and Environmental Studies Laboratory include fuel conversion, Bio and Fuel cells, Batteries, Energy Conservation, Geothermal, Hybrid Energy, and Renewable Energy. Meanwhile, analysis and measurement services include coal analysis, fuel oil analysis, biodiesel analysis, organic and inorganic fertilizer analysis, charcoal analysis, soil analysis, wood analysis, food & nutrition analysis and Growth Regulatory Analysis (ZPT).

The Energy and Environmental Laboratory also holds open training for the ITS community, academics, researchers, and also for society. The training includes biofuel training and analysis Instrumentation including SEM-EDX, XRD, XRF, GC, HPLC, thermal analysis, and ICP training.

ITS Robotics Center

Ahead of the industrial revolution 4.0, robotics technology has developed rapidly in the past few decades. Development of n Automation and use of robots in industry and other fields is predicted to keep increase in the future. Automation and use of robots will greatly help in increasing the efficiency of a process and the process will be more economical. The Development of Automation and Robotics Technology now widely used to help human activities. Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) as one of the center of technology in Indonesia also helped to develop automation and robotics technology through ITS Robotics Center.

ITS through the Directorate of Research and Community Service (DRPM) formed the Robotics Laboratory to advance robotics technology research to face challenges that may appear in the industrial revolution.

The Robotics Laboratory was established at the end of 2009. After inaugurated by Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, This laboratory begin to active on December 14th, 2010. Until now, ITS Robotics Center has four laboratories in operation, namely:

  • Intelligent Robot Laboratory
  • Production Robot Laboratory
  • Industrial Sensor Laboratory
  • Robot Control Laboratory

In term of Robotics, ITS has pioneered research, development and education. This is marked by the success of ITS in winning national, regional and international competition and also Indonesian Robot Contests (KRI). ITS Robotics Centers through its studies, research, and applications have made several innovation that can be used to help and fulfill the society needs.

Laboratory Based Education

Along with the scientific development in lectures, ITS has initiated to make changes to the educational base from originally focused in Classrooms to become Lab-Based Education (LBE). That means ITS will support all research activities in all academic community. Campus research culture itself is very important for the academic side. By strengthening it, ITS has large competency to develop the education system.

The Lab-Based Education system itself is an integrated laboratory system that supports lectures subject in it. Lab-Based Education consists of laboratories that have been registered and certified in accordance with the provisions. Thus there is a network between laboratories, it is possible to conduct collaborative research between different fields.

Until now, there are 80 laboratories that have been sertified by LBE in 7 faculties at ITS, with details of 17 laboratories in the The Faculty of Civil, Planning, and Geo Engineering, 12 laboratories in the Faculty of Science and Data Analysis, 24 laboratories in the Faculty of Industrial Technology and Systems Engineering, 21 The Faculty of Intelligent Electrical and Informatics Technology, 5 laboratories at the Faculty of Marine Technology, 1 laboratory at the faculty of vocations, and 4 laboratories at the The Faculty of Creative Design and Digital Business.
