The Department of Information Technology, ITS, launches the “Simple Habit, Big Impact” campaign by providing eco-friendly water refill stations to encourage students to bring personal tumblers and reduce single-use plastic waste.
Surabaya, DTI Administration Office — The accumulation of plastic waste in urban areas is reaching an alarming level. Referring to an ITS News report titled “Surabaya Terancam ‘Bom’ Sampah Plastik” (Surabaya Threatened by a Plastic Waste “Bomb”), single-use plastic bottled water is identified as one of the largest and most concerning contributors to waste volume. Responding to this environmental reality, the Department of Information Technology (DTI) at Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) is taking concrete action through an internal campaign themed “Simple Habit, Big Impact.”
The linear increase in the consumption of bottled water continuously adds to the volume of plastic bottle waste within the campus environment. In fact, the adverse effects of plastic pollution are far from minor; ranging from the contamination of soil and water sources, a serious threat to marine life, to the dangers of microplastic chemicals that are highly suspected of triggering chronic health issues in humans.
As a tangible form of commitment to supporting the Eco Campus program and safeguarding the health of the entire academic community, the ITS Department of Information Technology now provides free drinking water facilities accessible to all students, faculty members, and administrative staff.
These water refill dispenser facilities are strategically placed on the 7th Floor of the ITS Tower 2 Building. Through the provision of this facility, members of the department are strongly encouraged to cultivate the habit of bringing their own tumblers or personal water bottles from home and taking water sufficiently according to their needs while on campus.
“We want to build a collective awareness that major changes always begin with small habits. Carrying your own tumbler may seem simple, but if done consistently by the entire DTI academic community, the impact on reducing plastic waste will be highly significant,” stated the management of the Department of Information Technology.
Through the synergy of digital campaigns on social media and the provision of supporting infrastructure, the ITS Department of Information Technology hopes to foster a culture of sustainable environmental care, while simultaneously creating a healthy, clean learning environment that is free from dependence on single-use plastics.
