ITS Campus, ITS News — Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), through the Department of Information Technology, has implemented Smart Caring Assessment technology based on a mobile application and wearable device at Dautama Medica Primary Clinic in Jember. This innovation was developed to support the monitoring and evaluation of caring among nursing professional students during their clinical practice.

The initiative, titled “Implementation of Mobile- and Wearable Device-Based Smart Caring Assessment Technology to Support Nursing Professional Education at a Clinic in Jember,” designates Dautama Medica Primary Clinic as a partner in the ITS Community Service KKN (KKN Abmas) program. Located in Suren Village, Ledokombo District, Jember, the clinic is one of the clinical practice sites for nursing professional students from Universitas dr. Soebandi and other partner universities.

Previously, students’ caring evaluation was conducted manually through observations by clinical supervisors. This approach meant that assessment results were not yet systematically and continuously documented. Through the implementation of digital technology, ITS seeks to establish a more structured and data-driven evaluation process.

The ITS KKN Abmas team implemented C-AppS (Caring Assessment Application for Nursing Students), an application designed to digitally support the measurement and documentation of students’ caring. The application is integrated with smartwatches and smartphones to facilitate the collection of activity data, basic physiological indicators, and the completion of caring assessment instruments during clinical practice.

The data collected through the application and wearable device is subsequently connected to a cloud database and can be monitored through a monitoring dashboard. The system provides supporting data for clinical supervisors to conduct student monitoring and evaluation in a more systematic and well-documented manner.

The program was carried out through several stages, including partner needs analysis, technology preparation, socialization, training on the use of the application and wearable device, and system implementation among nursing professional students. The ITS team also provided ongoing assistance and evaluated the system’s usability and user acceptance.

The KKN Abmas team leader, Fuad Dary Rosyadi, S.Kom., M.Kom., together with the ITS Department of Information Technology team, developed the program through multidisciplinary collaboration. The expertise involved includes application development, cloud computing, Internet of Things (IoT), mobile application, data management, and nursing.

Beyond technology implementation, the program also promotes digital literacy among healthcare professionals, clinical supervising lecturers, and nursing professional students. The training covered the use of C-AppS, smartwatch integration with smartphones, digital completion of caring assessment instruments, utilization of the monitoring dashboard, and data management.

Through this program, the ITS KKN Abmas team aims to establish a more standardized, well-documented, and data-driven caring evaluation system. The implementation of this technology is expected to assist clinical supervisors in monitoring students’ progress while supporting improvements in the quality of nursing professional education.

The program’s sustainability is supported through ongoing assistance in system utilization, the provision of training modules, and the development of a cloud-based caring monitoring dashboard. This initiative also represents one of ITS’s contributions to leveraging digital health technology to support education and healthcare services.

Supporting the Achievement of the SDGs

The program supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:

  • SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being)
  • SDG 4 (Quality Education)
  • SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals)

Through collaboration between higher education institutions and healthcare partners in the implementation of digital technology.
