YOGYAKARTA – The Department of Biology at Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) conducted a benchmarking visit to the Faculty of Biology at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) on 20–21 November 2025. This activity focused on strengthening laboratory management, including facility management systems, safety measures, and laboratory support for academic and research activities.
This initiative represents an important effort to enhance the performance of laboratories within the ITS Biology Department so they can more effectively facilitate the needs of students, lecturers, researchers, and the wider community. With laboratories that are well-organized, safe, and aligned with technological advancements, the quality of learning and research is expected to continue improving.

Over the two-day visit, the delegation—consisting of the Head of the ITS Biology Department; the heads of the Undergraduate Biology, Master’s Biology, and Undergraduate Biotechnology study programs; laboratory technicians from the Bioscience and Animal Technology laboratories; as well as administrative and financial management staff of the department—had the opportunity to engage in direct discussions with the Dean and the heads of laboratories at the Faculty of Biology, UGM.
One of the key insights gained concerned the governance and management of experimental animal housing facilities (including mice) for animal research, in which infrastructure is a crucial aspect of biological and biotechnological research. UGM’s experience in managing laboratories in an integrated manner provided valuable lessons for ITS.

The Head of the ITS Biotechnology Study Program, Triono B. Saputro, PhD, stated that there are many valuable lessons to be learned from UGM. “Laboratory management at UGM is very well organized. We hope that the knowledge gained can serve as a foundation for improving the systems in ITS Biology,” he said.
In a similar vein, the Head of the ITS Biology Department, Prof. Awik Puji Dyah, expressed her appreciation for the opportunity provided. “We are very grateful to the Faculty of Biology at UGM for opening opportunities for shared learning. We hope that this collaboration can continue to strengthen the quality of laboratories at both institutions,” she remarked.
Meanwhile, the Head of the Undergraduate Biology Study Program at ITS, Dr. Wirdhatul Muslihatin, emphasized the importance of synergy among stakeholders. “Optimal laboratory management cannot be carried out independently. It requires collaboration among lecturers, laboratory technicians, departmental and institutional management, and all laboratory users,” she explained.
This activity directly contributes to the achievement of SDG 4: Quality Education, particularly in enhancing the quality of technology-based learning supported by safe and adequate facilities. Through strengthened laboratory management, the ITS Biology Department hopes to provide a better learning and research experience for students and to produce research that has a positive impact on society.
