ITS Campus, GLC News — Global Language Center (GLC) at Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) held the English as the Medium of Instruction (EMI) Training 2026 to improve the competence of university lecturers and instructors in delivering instruction in English. Held over five days from August 3–7, the event was attended by 21 participants from five universities.

Held at the Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (BTI) Room, GLC ITS, the training was designed to equip participants with practical approaches to delivering lessons in English effectively and confidently. The participants came from Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember, Universitas Negeri Malang, Universitas Airlangga, Politeknik Negeri Batam, and Politeknik Elektronika Negeri Surabaya.

The event was officially opened by the Director of Human Resources and Organizations at ITS, Prof Dr Eng Trika Pitana ST MSc, who also delivered a speech. The Head of the Global Language Center ITS, Ms. Cahyani Satiya Pratiwi SS, also gave a speech at the opening of the event. On this occasion, Ms. Cahyani shared the profile of GLC ITS, its milestones, ITS’s needs for EMI Training, and the journey of organizing the program. 

In her speech, Ms. Cahyani explained the role of EMI Training in enhancing lecturers’ competencies. “EMI Training is a capacity-building program for ITS lecturers to support effective English-language teaching that meets international standards. This program strengthens lecturers’ pedagogical competencies while encouraging the implementation of student-centered learning so that teaching becomes more interactive, collaborative, and focused on students,” she said.

This training featured Mr. John Pierce as the facilitator and Ms. Meilisa S. A. Ariyanto MPd as the co-facilitator. Mr. John Pierce is an instructor of English as a second or foreign language, as well as an IELTS preparation teacher at ITS. Meanwhile, Ms. Meilisa is an alumna of the EMI Training MOOC from Ohio University and the Coordinator of the Academic Writing Center (AWC) at ITS.

The training covered Talk Time, Classroom Set-up, Scaffolding, Teacher Reflection, Comprehensible Input, Project-Based Learning, and Feedback. Participants also prepared a Microteaching Planning session and attended sessions on Analyzing EMI Teaching and Completing Small Group EMI Practice.

Applying the material became an important part of the training through microteaching practice. From the third to the fifth day, 21 participants took turns simulating teaching for about 10–15 minutes each. Through this practice, participants had the opportunity to apply the EMI strategies they had learned in a classroom learning context.

The training series was then concluded with a feedback and evaluation session, a summary of the material, a group photo session, and the awarding of certificates. This activity served as the closing of the learning program, combining conceptual instruction, lesson plan preparation, teaching practice, and feedback.

Improving lecturers’ competencies through EMI Training 2026 also supports Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, Quality Education, especially through teacher training and the development of qualified educators. On the other hand, strengthening the professional skills of lecturers and instructors aligns with SDG 8, Decent Work and Economic Growth, particularly in supporting productivity and job quality in higher education settings.

The skills gained from the training are expected to be applied in English-language teaching so that the teaching process becomes more effective, interactive, and supports academic readiness in an international context. (*)
