The ITS Department of Actuarial Science focuses on the measurement and management of risk. Actuarial science combines mathematics, statistics, finance, probability, and business management, supported by strong computer programming skills. An actuarial science graduate or actuary applies mathematical theories and statistical and financial techniques to solve real-world problems involving risk. These problems generally concern future events with financial implications, particularly the amounts to be paid and the timing of payments, both of which are uncertain.
