7 Reasons Why You Should Study Industrial Engineering at ITS

Choosing a major isn’t just about interest, but also about future opportunities. For those seeking a flexible, industry-relevant major with numerous career options, ITS Industrial Engineering is often a strategic choice.

This major is known for combining engineering, systems, data science, and business all in one package. It’s no wonder ITS Industrial Engineering is always a favorite among students seeking a broad career path after graduation.

1. Superior Accreditation and International Standards

ITS Industrial Engineering is under the Department of Systems and Industrial Engineering and has Superior accreditation from LAM Teknik, which indicates the best quality of education at the national level [1]. In addition, this program also has international recognition such as ABET and AUN-QA which indicates that the curriculum and graduate achievements have met global standards [2]. This international accreditation is important because it facilitates academic recognition abroad and increases the competitiveness of graduates in multinational companies.

2. Study in 5 Laboratories with Different Focuses

The main advantage of ITS Industrial Engineering is its multidisciplinary approach through five main laboratories. Students learn not only theory but also understand the industry from various systems perspectives.

The Manufacturing Systems Laboratory focuses on the design and optimization of comprehensive production systems. Students study lean manufacturing, the Toyota Production System, industrial automation, and the integration of humans and machines within a single production system. This approach helps students understand how to increase efficiency, reduce waste, and design modern manufacturing systems based on Industry 4.0.

The Logistics and Supply Chain Management (LSCM) Laboratory examines how the flow of goods and information is managed from upstream to downstream. Students study distribution, warehouse management, transportation, demand planning, and supply chain network optimization. This field is highly relevant because the supply chain is a key factor in the success of global companies.

The Ergonomics and Work System Design (EPSK) Laboratory focuses on human interaction and work systems. Students study biomechanics, work posture analysis, workstation design, and human factors engineering. The goal is to create work systems that are not only efficient but also safe, comfortable, and sustainable for the people within them.

The Industrial Management Systems Design Laboratory (PSMI) emphasizes organizational systems and business process design. Students learn business process modeling, organizational systems engineering, operations management, and industrial transformation. This lab develops students’ ability to view industry from a strategic and managerial perspective.

The Quantitative Modeling and Industrial Policy Analysis Laboratory (Q-MIPA) focuses on quantitative approaches to industrial decision-making. Students study optimization, simulation, system dynamics, and data-driven policy analysis. This field is highly relevant for students interested in data analytics, consulting, or industrial planning based on mathematical models.

This multi-laboratory approach enables ITS Industrial Engineering graduates to develop a strong systems perspective and not be confined to a single field [1].

3. Alumni Spread Across Top Companies

The quality of the department is also reflected in the track record of its alumni. ITS Industrial Engineering alumni have many careers in national and multinational companies, ranging from FMCG, consulting, technology, to manufacturing. Based on alumni profiles found on professional platforms and institutional publications, ITS Industrial Engineering graduates work for companies such as Unilever, Astra International, Deloitte, Accenture, and technology companies like Shopee and Tokopedia [3]. Furthermore, many alumni have chosen the entrepreneurial path and founded their own startups, demonstrating the career flexibility of Industrial Engineering graduates.

4. A Balanced Combination of Engineering and Business

Industrial Engineering is often referred to as a bridge between the worlds of engineering and business. At ITS, students learn not only system optimization and process analysis but also operations management, supply chain strategy, and data-driven decision-making. This combination enables graduates to understand both technical aspects and business value, leading many to pursue careers as management trainees, consultants, and strategic planners at large companies [2].

5. ITS’s Competitive and Growing Ecosystem

ITS is known as one of the best technology universities in Indonesia with a strong academic ecosystem. Industrial Engineering students are accustomed to participating in national and international competitions, research projects, and industry collaborations from an early age. This competitive environment encourages students to develop more rapidly in technical, leadership, and problem-solving skills [1].

6. Wide-Open Global Opportunities

With ITS’s extensive international network, students have the opportunity to participate in exchange programs, double degrees, and even further study abroad. The internationally recognized curriculum and global accreditation help enhance graduates’ academic and career mobility internationally [2].

7. Flexible and Future-Proof Major

In an ever-changing world of work, flexible majors are becoming increasingly important. ITS Industrial Engineering equips students with systems thinking, data analysis, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. These skills remain relevant across various industrial eras, from manufacturing to digital technology. This flexibility is why Industrial Engineering is often referred to as one of the most future-proof majors in the engineering field [3].

Choosing a major is about choosing a space for growth. ITS Industrial Engineering offers a strong combination of academic reputation, breadth of knowledge, and wide-open career opportunities. If you’re looking for a major that’s not only relevant today but also future-ready, ITS Industrial Engineering is the choice.
