Surabaya– The Department of Geomatics Engineering at Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) conducted an academic visit to the Department of Geodetic Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), on Thursday (July 16), to explore strategic collaboration in the implementation of the Three Pillars of Higher Education (Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi). Held at the Meeting Room of the Department of Geodetic Engineering, the visit marked an important step toward strengthening institutional partnerships in education, research, and community engagement.
The ITS delegation was led by the Head of the Department of Geomatics Engineering, Dr. Khomsin, S.T., M.T., accompanied by faculty members. The delegation was warmly welcomed by the academic staff of UGM’s Department of Geodetic Engineering, led by Ir. Heri Sutanta, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D. In addition to discussing future academic collaborations, the visit also served as an opportunity to support one of the Department of Geomatics Engineering ITS faculty members who is currently pursuing doctoral studies at UGM.
In the field of education, both departments discussed various collaborative initiatives, including collaborative teaching, student exchange programs, and the implementation of online and hybrid learning activities. The two institutions also explored opportunities for faculty members to serve as guest lecturers in courses with overlapping areas of expertise, such as Geospatial Information Infrastructure, Disaster Mitigation and Management, and Maritime Law.
Research collaboration was another key topic of discussion. Both departments expressed their commitment to developing joint research proposals, conducting collaborative research supervision, and enhancing the quality of scientific publications. The Department of Geomatics Engineering ITS also introduced opportunities for academic development through double-degree programs, while inviting UGM’s Department of Geodetic Engineering to participate in various scientific activities organized by ITS.
One of the proposed collaborations includes the involvement of the Department of Geodetic Engineering UGM as a co-host of the GeoICON International Conference, as well as collaboration as reviewers and members of the editorial board of the GEOID Journal, which is currently being prepared for Scopus indexing. These initiatives are expected to enhance the quality of scholarly publications while expanding the national and international academic networks of both institutions.
Through this meeting, the Department of Geomatics Engineering ITS hopes to establish a sustainable partnership that will generate meaningful contributions to higher education, research innovation, and community service. The collaboration also reflects the department’s commitment to strengthening strategic academic partnerships in support of the advancement of geospatial science and technology for national and global development.
