Campus Food Waste

Waste Management

 

Having initiatives towards sustainable and environment friendly campus, ITS prioritizes issues such as water and air pollution reduction and waste management. The phenomenon of high level public consumption that led and impact the amount of waste with an unsettled management system concerned ITS to promote a new lifestyle in waste management. At ITS itself, waste processing is carried out with the 3R principle: Reuse, Reduce, and Recycle. The 3R principle is implemented through reducing the use of single-use materials, E-waste drop boxes and waste sorting.

Waste Disposal (Organic and Anorganic)

 

ITS measures the amount of waste generated and recycled across the university. Waste in the university is handled through composting and recycling, while food waste is handled through composting. The residue is sent to landfill site. ITS also has a mini waste processing center to implement organic waste treatment policy.

Facing Corona, ITS Helps Students to Eat Healthy

 

Following an online learning policy in anticipation of the outbreak of Covid-19, the Directorate of Student Affairs of ITS took a tactical stance to help students. Forming a team named Ditmawa for Student’s Survival (DUSMAK), the team aims to provide information to students in ITS Student Dormitory in their needs of meals during the self-prevention of Covid-19. DUSMAK team immediately deployed its members to conduct field surveys and collect the data of food stalls that are still open or already closed around ITS for the students.

ITS Plans the Revitalization of Halal and Healthy Canteens

 

Reflecting on the Covid-19 pandemic situation that relies on a healthy lifestyle with adequate health protocols, ITS pays attention to snacks sold in the campus area. To that end, the community service team (Abmas) and thematic community service program (KKN) planned the first halal and healthy canteen revitalization design at its Department of Marine Engineering.

Circular Letter of ITS Rector No. T-95007-IT2-TU.00.08-2019 about ITS’ Initiatives towards Sustainable and Environmental Friendly

 

Through ITS Rector’s Circular Letter No. 95007 Year 2019, the rector of ITS instructs all lecturers, education personnel, and students to establish ITS as a sustainable and environmentally friendly campus and reinforce ITS Smart Eco Campus program. The circular letter details specific initiatives and goals ITS has set in order to reduce its environmental impact and promote sustainability on campus. This includes implementing and improving environmental sanitation, promoting energy efficiency and conservation, and establishing eco-friendly transportation.

Halal food is a very important thing to consider, especially for Muslims. However, many people often pay less attention to the halal status of food in various places. With this condition, Center for Halal Studies of ITS verified the halal status of food stands in canteens within ITS, starting from the canteen at the Chemical Engineering Department.

ITS Opens Agri-Food and Biotechnology Research Center to Support Food Resilience

 

Responding to the targets on Indonesia’s 2020-2024 National Medium-Term Development Plan on increasing quantity and quality of food and medicine for public welfare, ITS established Agri-Food and Biotechnology Research Center. Once inaugurated on January 2020, this research center is expected to improve and enlarge ITS role in research fields related to food and medicine resilience.

ITS Lecturer Analyzing Rice Productivity for Food Security

 

Measurement of rice productivity as an effort to maintain food security is often through unmeasured observations, consequently, the validity of the data is still insufficient. Thus, ITS Faculty of Geomatics Engineering Department launched research analysis on agricultural productivity estimation using Insitu observation, growth phase and Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA).

ITS Gives Recommendations for National Food Security in Post Covid-19 Pandemic

 

Covid-19 pandemic currently has impacts on many sectors, one of them is food security in the agricultural sector. It encourages ITS through the Centre for Public Policy and Business (PKKPBI) to release recommendations on the redefinition of government’s role in handling problems in agricultural sector.

Empowers Lemon Farmer, Two ITS Students Create SayLemon

 

With the theme of Creative Industries, the team chaired by Fauzi Andiari Sya’ban presented a business plan called SayLemon as a practical solution for lemon farming during the Covid-19 pandemic. This innovation is based on the problem of the large number of lemon farmers in Banyuwangi who are losing money due to the low sales of lemons during Covid-19 pandemic.

Using Herbal Plants, Batu City Government Collaborates with ITS

 

City Mayor of Batu, Ms. Dewanti Rumpoko together with Forkopimda and Vice Rector IV of ITS, Dr. Bambang Pramujati, carried out a symbolic planting of Porang in the Educational Conservation Model Area (AMKE) at Batu City. Batu City Government planned this project to be an alternative for providing food in the future with the collaboration with ITS to utilize herbal plants.

ITS Millennial Farmer Community Participates in Urban Organic Farming Training

 

ITS Millennial Farmer Community participated in the “Organic Farming Training in Urban Areas” event at ITS Dept. Business Management Plaza in commemoration of World Food Day. The organic farming training event in urban areas was held after seeing the opportunities for organic farming in urban areas, which have now become a trend among millennials.

UQ and ITS Mechanical Engineering Students Help Farmers in Gresik with Corn Chopper Innovation

 

Universitas Qomaruddin (UQ) Gresik in collaboration with ITS Surabaya provides assistance to farmers in Bolo Village, Ujung Pangkah District, Gresik. The program chaired by the Department of Mechanical Engineering ITS Surabaya, Dr. Wiwiek Hendrowati, S.T., M.T., and carries the theme ‘Product-Based Community Service’. The students provided assistance with a corn cob chopper to help farmers during the harvesting process.

Smart Agriculture Innovation by ITS Lecturer

 

In an agrarian country like Indonesia, more efforts are needed to support sustainability in the agricultural sector. Therefore, a lecturer from ITS designed a website for smart agriculture through her research entitled Smart Agriculture Development to Improve the Supply Chain Value of Agricultural Commodities in Supporting Smart City.

Urban Farming at ITS

 

The Eco Urban Farming program is carried out by utilizing vacant land in ITS as an organic farming land. The green house is also built on the ITS Eco Urban Farming land with knocked down system so that it can be moved to another place (portable). In 2020, ITS Eco Urban Farming already has 8 greenhouses, 3 open lands, 1 aquaponic greenhouse and Smart Eco Campus Gallery.

Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) is dedicated to promoting the economic well-being of the community through various initiatives. These include the development of alternative products to reduce imports, the advancement of technological innovation to support local entrepreneurship, and mentorship programs for micro, small and medium-sized entrepreneurs.
