ITS Toxic Waste Treatment

ITS Toxic Waste Treatment

ITS waste comes from several academic activities, especially wet laboratory activities, as well as from activities at medical centers. Toxic waste or hereinafter referred to as Hazardous and Toxic Waste (B3) at ITS is partially handled, namely 60-70%. The management of B3 waste originating from laboratory activities is carried out separately by grouping, labeling and collecting for processing and/or transportation by a certified third party. Meanwhile temporary storage for non-medical waste such as academic laboratory waste is placed in jerry cans or containers that have been labeled according to the characteristics of each B3 waste, and arranged on shelves or storage rooms that have a roof and are protected from sunlight. In managing the transportation of B3 waste, ITS collaborates with certified third parties with a collection schedule every semester which is carried out collectively from several Department laboratories.

Specific waste management is a systematic, comprehensive and sustainable activity that includes reduction and handling. Another specific type of waste produced by ITS is waste containing B3 waste such as batteries, accumulators and ink cartridges which are disposed of in drop boxes. Meanwhile, unused ITS electronic waste must be stored until it is bleached by ITS.

And in the management of B3 waste at ITS, temporary storage is carried out in bins/containers as well as freezers/cold storage for medical waste such as gloves, used masks, expired medicines, and syringes, which are produced by the ITS Medical Center, as well as other departments in ITS. Medical B3 waste was previously packaged in yellow plastic according to procedures.
