[Surabaya, May 20, 2026] — Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) participated in the Capacity Building Program on Hygiene and Sanitation Knowledge for Food Handlers and Food Managers Batch IV 2026, organized by the Surabaya City Health Office. The event, held on May 19–20, 2026, at Gedung Gedung Graha YKP Surabaya, Jl. Penjaringan Sari No.39 Surabaya, was attended by around 400 participants consisting of food business actors in Surabaya. Their participation reflected the strong need to improve understanding of hygiene and sanitation, food safety, and halal food product management.

The program was organized to enhance the knowledge capacity of food handlers, managers, and persons in charge of food businesses, particularly in the areas of hygiene and sanitation, food management, and the safe preparation and serving of food for the public. During the event, participants received insights from speakers across various institutions, including the Health Office, Poltekkes Kemenkes Surabaya, the Faculty of Medicine of Universitas Airlangga, BPOM Surabaya, and the ITS Halal Study Center.

In one of the training sessions, ITS delivered a presentation entitled “Halal Food Product Industry Management for Food and Beverage Business Actors.” This topic is essential because food and beverage business actors are not only expected to produce food that is tasty and marketable, but also to ensure that their products are safe, hygienic, and halal.

“Strengthening halal understanding is expected to help business actors build a more orderly and hygienic production system that meets the needs of Muslim consumers,” said Setiyo Gunawan, Head of the ITS Halal Center.

The urgency of this topic is becoming even more significant ahead of the implementation of the Mandatory Halal Certification policy in October 2026. This policy highlights the importance of business readiness, particularly in the food and beverage sector, to ensure that products circulating in the market comply with halal certification requirements. For food business actors, understanding halal food product industry management is a strategic step to prepare their businesses to be more systematic in their processes, compliant with regulations, and capable of increasing consumer trust.

The involvement of the ITS Halal Study Center in this activity reflects the university’s commitment to supporting capacity building for business actors, particularly in the food and beverage sector. Through collaboration with the Surabaya City Health Office and various stakeholders, ITS seeks to strengthen halal literacy, food safety, and hygiene sanitation as essential foundations for developing a healthy, safe, halal, and competitive food industry.

With the successful implementation of this program, food handlers and food managers are expected to apply the knowledge they have gained in their daily business practices. This capacity-building effort is also expected to support the growth of a more professional, sustainable, and trusted halal food product industry ecosystem in Surabaya and Indonesia.
