SURABAYA – Who says libraries are just for students? Last Wednesday (August 14, 2024), a team of librarians from the ITS Library reached out to the people of Surabaya through a live broadcast on Radio Merdeka Surabaya. Centered on the topic “Information Literacy Broadcast: Getting to Know ITS Library’s E-Resources,” this event served as clear evidence that libraries are now taking the initiative to share knowledge.
This event is part of the ITS Library’s Extension Services program. Through this service, we aim to break down the barrier that libraries are only for the campus community. The ITS Library is committed to being an inclusive, open literacy center—a place where anyone, from students and teachers to young researchers throughout Surabaya, can access high-quality information.
Opening a Window to the World with E-Resources
During the one-hour broadcast, the ITS library team shared important information about e-resources. Many people are unaware that the ITS Library subscribes to more than 15 international databases, such as ScienceDirect, IEEE Xplore, SpringerLink, and Scopus. This collection contains millions of scientific journal articles and digital textbooks from around the world that are invaluable for supporting research and learning.
“We want the public to know that the world of literacy has gone digital. With e-resources, global knowledge sources are now more easily accessible. We’re here to help people navigate the flood of information and choose credible sources,” said Eva Mursidah, one of the ITS librarians who served as a speaker.
Open to the Public
The ITS Library believes that literacy is the key to improving the quality of society. Through our outreach services, we not only provide access but also educate users on how to effectively search for scientific journals, select reliable sources, and avoid misleading predatory journals.
The enthusiasm of the radio listeners was also extraordinary. The question-and-answer session demonstrated that the people of Surabaya have a strong curiosity about access to scientific information. Some listeners even asked how the general public could collaborate with or take advantage of the ITS Library’s literacy services.
Let’s Grow Together Through Literacy
For us, every step we take to share knowledge is a form of service. The ITS Library will not stop here; we will continue to offer literacy programs through various media channels so that access to high-quality scientific information becomes more widespread.
The ITS Library is open to everyone. If you need access to information, literacy guidance, or simply want to study in a comfortable campus environment, don’t hesitate to contact us. Let’s work together to build a literate and well-informed community!
