Biology

Indonesia ranks 4th in the world by natural sources’ mega-biodiversity in both terrestrial and marine environments. Synergies with existing potential as well as the needs of the community as well as the global world, ITS vision, mission, and objectives since 2014 is developed and focused on marine biology, environment, energy, and food security.

Since ITS establishment in 1998, The Departement of Biology which has been known for its theories and applications in the field of marine biology, also expanded its scope of theories and applications, to improve the national development of Indonesia, both to create quality human resources that will be able to participate in the management of optimal and prudent resources, national/international index research as well as in the community outreach.

Department of Biology that is in the auspices of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) opens S2 Program (postgraduate) of biology in the even semester of the school year 2015/2016 (SK No. 21/KPT/I/2015 Minister of Research, Technology and Higher education on biology study program of ITS Magister Program)

Supported by 25 qualified lecturer: 1 Professor, 8 doctoral, 4 doctoral candidates, and 12 masters. The background of the lecturer is varied and distributed evenly in the fields of biochemistry, marine biology, molecular biology, physiology, and taxonomy in the realm of the crop, animal, microbiological and ecological sciences.

Purpose

Magister Program (S2) biology aims to educate and train students in developing and updating biological sciences by mastering and understanding scientific methods. Also, participants will be able to solve problems in science-related research activities, and able to improve intellectuals and professionals. PS S2 Biology graduates are expected to achieve these 3 skills includes:

WORK FIELD SKILLS

• Able to develop and apply biological sciences to solve problems in the field of maritime, environmental, energy, and food security through creative research and tested with approaches ranging from the molecular level to the ecosystem.

MASTERING KNOWLEDGE

• Deeply mastering biological sciences and biotechnology of plants, animals, microbes on an individual, cellular, and molecular level as well as its interactions with the environment, to contribute to the development and solution of problems in the marine field, environmental management, energy and food security with inter and multidisciplinary approaches.

MANAGERIAL ABILITY

• Able to manage and develop biology research that is beneficial for science and society and gained national and/or international recognition.

Field Of Interest

Magister Program of Biology  has a field of interest in bioscience and biotechnology with 3 scientific fields including:

2. Environment
3. Biotechnology

Academic Activities

Magister Program of Biology is conducted within 4 semesters with a minimum credit of 36 credits. Distributed credit expense in mandatory courses including seminar and thesis, mandatory courses of science, and optional courses. Academic activities include lectures, laboratory practice, field practices, seminars, and research with a mentoring system by lecturers, and mentor Lecturer. The results of theses research were published in seminars or national/international scientific journals and concluded with a test before the evaluation team.
