ITS Campus, ITS News — Continuing to strengthen its role as a pioneer in the field of maritime technology in Indonesia, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) once again showed its determination to contribute to the nation. This time, it was demonstrated through the initiative of the National Ship Design and Engineering Center (NaSDEC), Science Techno Park (STP) ITS which held a seminar focusing on the submarine technology development center in Indonesia, on Tuesday (19/8).
Delivered by the Dean of FTK ITS Dr Ing Ir Setyo Nugroho, this seminar was attended and supported by various strategic parties in the maritime field. Ranging from representatives of the Indonesian Navy (TNI AL), PT PAL Indonesia, ExxonMobil, to the renowned submarine design company, namely Nevesbu. “This seminar is expected to be the first step for the first submarine technology development center in Indonesia,” said the lecturer from the ITS Departement of Sea Transportation Engineering in his speech.

From the defense side, First Admiral of the Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) Muhammad Iwan Kusumah SE said that the need for optimal submarines in Indonesia is very important. Considering Indonesia is a very vast maritime country, its marine wealth and underwater communication lines need to be guarded. Therefore, a capable submarine development center is needed to realize maritime independence and sovereignty.
He conveyed that there are five fundamental pillars that a submarine must have to optimize Indonesia’s underwater defense. Ranging from funding, industrial capacity, infrastructure, human resources, to safety systems. “These five pillars must be built and maintained in a balanced way to create an effective and reliable submarine force,” Iwan emphasized.

From the technology development side, Nevesbu Commercial Director Albert Jurgens stated that Nevesbu itself has developed a fully electric submarine technology. This submarine is considered suitable for national maritime defense needs. “The development of this Moray 600E type submarine can be a pilot example for Indonesia for the future submarine development center,” he stated.
Furthermore, Albert said that the flagship electric submarine model from the Dutch company has various advantages. This submarine is designed as a shallow-water attack submarine that allows for underwater operations for a duration of two weeks. In addition, its significantly simplified design and system will also minimize its maintenance costs.
Not only that, the event held at the ITS National Ship Design and Engineering Center (NaSDEC) building was also attended by representatives from various educational institutions. Ranging from Technical University (TU) Delft, the Naval Technology College (STTAL), the Naval Academy (AAL), to the Surabaya Shipping Polytechnic. The presence of these educational institutions indicates a close collaboration between the academic world and industry to advance maritime technology.
This seminar also contributes to supporting the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) point 9, namely industry, innovation, and infrastructure. Through this seminar, ITS plays an active role in encouraging maritime technology innovation, especially for submarines, which are an important part of the development of Indonesia’s national defense industry and infrastructure.
